Spectacular Unreal 3 Engine Tech Demo

jmac353 | February 21, 2008 | Video | PC Playstation 3
Wow, Epic games has made some great improvements on their Unreal 3 Engine since Gears of War it seems. The liquid effects and damage modeling are outstanding.

Where was this when BioShock was being created?.... No really, Epic... where was this when BioShock was being made? It seems like Epic has held out on their supporters yet again, there's no reason this shouldn't have been available to 2KGames for BioShock.

The answetr to why Bioshock didn't get this new stuff, it wasn't in the engine or was not ready for use, yet. The guy said so himself that they are always adding things on this engine.

Yeah, no I totally understand that, but something you may or may not realize is that this kind of stuff has been in the UE3 engine since the beginning. It's just become enhanced and more efficient now. We've been seeing UE3 tech demos for ages now, years before Gears of War was even released.

The thing is, for a game like bioshock, this water tech should have been focused on and expedited to get closer to this level of enhancement.

This is the kind of tech that you delay your game for.

wow talk about dense, dude. has it occured to you the epic may have said to not use it, on the grounds that it was not perfected? Or lets just take a wild shot and beleive the guy in the video. He says" One of the major things we've added is Ambient occlusion technology." Keyword ADDED. As the guy goes on, he never gives any indication that this stuff has been there the whole time. Also, considering Bioshock came out last year, and this stuff would appear to have just been added into the engine, your assumption that Epic held back is bullheaded. Even if this was around when Bioshock was being made, it might have been in the early fazes. So sit down shut up and put up. Be glad it is here now.

No, you're dense. So what if Epic says not to use it? These other companies are free to use their engine in any way they want. They've paid to do so. They can modify the engine all they want.

I guarantee you this wasn't added on, this has always been in it, you're kidding yourself if there was no liquid and soft body physics simulator in the UE3 engine. Besides, I know for a fact that there was.

Listen son, unless you've kept up with the UE3 engine tech before Gears was even announced you don't know shit.

wow the water interaction is the best ive seen...i mean uncharteds water looked gorgeous, but the character interaction with it could have been better.

also, i guess epic doesnt have as much interest in the ps3...at least that what i got by the host final statement..... but then again cant anyone use the unreal engine?

The water looked great, no doubt, but I thought that some of the other effects were much more impressive.

Yeah, pretty much anyone. Which has also gotten Epic quite a few lawsuits under their belt from "holding back"
