Saints Row 2 Trailer Making Fun Out Of GTAIV

Krunal | June 05, 2008 | Video | Playstation 3 Wii
It's not something that you see everyday - Saints Row 2 making fun out of GTAIV. Since the first Saints Row was released, it was often remarked as a 'GTA Clone' but now they're trying with all their might to one up the GTA and be even better, and from the looks of the video they may be doing just that...

That is *bleep*ing awesome. I love how they used the same GTA font too. I especially love the line at the end 'We know you're out doing that other stuff right now but when you're done, we'll be waiting.'

The funny thing is that everything they made fun of is true. How is going to a cabaret or bowling with a friend fun?
This video has peaked my interest in SR2. It looks like we might finally have a GTA beater.

      I agree completely.

SR2 looks like it's going to be everthing I hoped GTA IV would be. And by that I mean SA which is bigger, has better graphics and lets you do even more crazy stuff! As soon as I saw base jumping in that trailer I was hooked.

Well done, Saint's Row. You have probably just sold about 20 000 copies with that single trailer.

Do you think the graphics look better in SR2? They look worse to me.But maybe that's because unlike GTAIV, they are going for a more cartoony look.

May I just say... GTA what? Saints Row 2 is really REALLY shaping up to be the game that was supposed to be GTA (okay contradiction but I don't care, I'm simply amazed at how amazing this game is looking).

I agree with you 100% Mnmfan... and it seems like posting it in the GTA social forum has gotten it quite a few hits Look at the rates rise

Haha, that's actually a very nice trailer! Saints Row 2 has the potential to be huge, let's hope Volition doesn't screw it up.

I didn't really have any plans to buy it, but seeing this it's making me hyped up... let's hope the same thing that happened with GTAIV doesn't happen here (i.e. the hype causes mass expectations, which aren't met)

Haha, they made very valid points as Mnmfan mentioned. I prefer GTA to Saints Row, but perhaps I'll have a change of heart once I try out this sequel.

God, I know how unpopular opinions like this are in the GTA community, but I REALLY and desperately hope that SR2 DOES NOT go for realism like GTA IV did. GTA IV is truly epic, amazing and groundbreaking, but, as good as it is, I just find the new "realistic" gameplay mechanics to be somewhat tedious and plodding rather than unrestrained fun. I wouldn't trade either of my versions of GTA IV for anything, but I am hoping and even praying that Volitions fills what I perceive to be the hole left in the sandbox genre. Since GTA is going in a totally new direction, and that's perfectly fine, I hope that Saint's Row is completely unrealistic, wild and over the top like San Andreas and the last gen GTA games.

I firmly believe there is a place for both styles in the genre, but I would hate to see the old-school style become extinct.

You've echoed my thoughts there Chiro, though I'm going to go and say that GTAIV (for me) was slightly less epic than it was for you, but a great game nonetheless. It just didn't give me any motivation to go out and kill random strangers for the hell of it, since I always got the police on my back

100% agree with you there, Chiro. SR 1 was alright, just lacked some of the things that it needed to be a real GTA competitor (ie flying, boating etc.).

*bleep*ing awesome. I loved the rib on GTA IV and it might be very effective seeing as many gamers didn't like the direction GTA took this time around. I know I'll be vying to get this game.

It's probably why they've decided to go and make a trailer like this. It's probably why it's been delayed, they want to add extra features that ensures it's better than GTAIV.

LMAO I'm amazed at the number of people who turned their backs on GTA IV so quickly, and I'm not even referencing Saint's Row. Yes, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion. Yes, I know you don't HAVE to like GTA IV. But, I truthfully and honestly believe that more than half of the people complaining about IV never once accepted the game for what it is. Everyone wanted it to be San Andreas again. Everyone wanted it to be what they wanted it to be, instead of accepting the great game that it is on its own. Yes, Saint's Row will be fun for what it is, but you can't say this is what GTA IV was supposed to be, because GTA IV is what GTA IV is supposed to be.

I have accepted it for what it is and I'm still disappointed in it.I will NEVER sell it and I far from hate it, but the fun GTA once had is gone.I feel that this game coming out is one of the greatest things to happen in gaming because of GTAIV.I feel this is going to be the yin to GTA's yang.I have a feeling both games are going to make me want to play the other.

I think the problem was that we had an expectation of the game that it never met. We didn't want San Andreas, god knows I hated the fact that there were just overly TOO many things to do in San Andreas, but R* didn't just remove some of those things, they removed pretty much ALL of those, leaving you nothing much to do once the game is completed.

When we say it'll be what GTAIV was supposed to be, we mean that in terms of our expectations, we now believe that Saints Row will reach that expectation. It most likely too will fail, however with expectations as the same level, we may actually be able to accurately compare the two.

incorrect Krunal IT seems people want to make excuses for not having anything to do with GTA4 rather than go out and do it. See GTA4 is better in ways where while the cops are tougher you can pretty much get rid of the stars Via phone easy as that.

Stop making excuses as to why the game isn't fun. Try experimenting with the game.
I find the game more fun than SA to be honest. SA was a total bore.

SR2 trailer was cute but still I don't liked all the stuff they made fun of so meh.

Stop telling people what to do... You seem to pick a fault with everything, do you like going against the grain? If people hate it you love it, if people love it you hate it, whats that about? I mean you have your own opinions but some people just do not like GTA IV it is that simple, i was bored of the game after a week, i am inventive and creative but there is no incentive when the game is devoid of all fun...

          Gamesta100 | June 06, 2008
It doesn't matter how easy it is to get rid of the cops.It doesn't make it any less tedious when you have the cops on your ass 95% of the time.

If you had to add up 1+1 every minute, would you just say "well it's easy so it doesn't bother me".

If I wanted the cops to chase me every 10 seconds for punching someone in the face, I'd go outside and do it.

Nikki Im telling them stop making excuses cause in all honesty you make the fun out of the game.

Fine i'll join the crowd GTA4 sucks. Happy.
You see how stupid that sounds, they dont' even like the game for what it truly is, but they rather pick the game apart.

At this point they're going in such wildly different directions. There's plenty of room for both games to be successful.

I'm glad they kinda brought it back at the end. They shouldn't attack GTA though.

Can't blame them though. If the reaction here at GG is any indication they really struck a chord with people.

Why not? Rockstar attack every other game through parody and absolute bare knuckle burns through the game and often other media, why shouldn't the tables be turned after all this game looks like it could kick the living shit out of GTA IV in sheer fun.

Yeah i really want this game now, But I'm not gonna let myself get hyped again. GTA has pretty much disappointed me in every game at how many opportunities it misses each and every time, and now its gone all realistic, and not retain the soul of what i loved to begin with, i think I'll have to move on to the next spiritual GTA here

Don't get me wrong, I love GTA IV. The activities just get old real fast. These Saints Row 2 activities really aren't activities, just things to mess around with in the game.

GTA IV is one of my favorite games this year, but I miss the wacky, unrealistic things we could do. It's been limited, gotta admit. Saints Row 2 will fill that hole. I'll likely still play GTA on the side, however, multiplayer's a blast. xD

Actually knowing Volition these will be activities, like insurance fraud was in the original, some maybe spur of the moment things meaning you don't have to go to a blip to start them like you did insurance fraud, but they will still be activities and they will still show in the stats and you will still probably get points and money for them.

Final Blade, you are the one being closed minded. You say that the player makes the "fun things to do" and to certain extent you're right. However, the genital consensus among the people who have issues with GTA IV is that there isn't enough FUN to be had within the scope of the limited gameplay physics, which MOST of us complaining in this comment thread feel are BOGGED down, burdened and heavily laden with limiting realism. If your analogy is true then I will send you my copy of Mario Sunshine from last Gen's GC and you can go have some serious fun with that! Hey, and don't tell me that Mario Sunshine is a kiddy game and is boring. Because that's just a cop out and the player makes the game fun! So that means that if you can't have a BLAST in Mario Sunshine, then you must be closed minded, right? **eyeroll**

Seriously, GTA IV is a great game in a lot of ways, but it is NOT fun if you inherently DO NOT like the physics of the game. Take my little laundry list of complaints, for example:

Is it fun to go on rampages, like it used to be in past GTA games? Well, not for me. Not when it takes Niko so GOD DAMNED long to steal a stupid car. He has to check the door, which is always locked. Then he has to break the window. Then he has to fiddle with the ignition to hotwire it. Meanwhile, with your 4 star wanted level, you are being shot up like swiss cheese instead of soaring off at 150 MPH. of course, if you DO manage to actually steal the car, the acceleration is so damned slow off the line, you could easily lose ALL your health just stealing a car. Yipee. more realism anyone?

Getting into a fireight with the cops is no fun either. Why? Because Niko is so weak and the cops can so easily cut through your armor and health that it makes what used to be fun terrorist activity nothing more than a chore.

Yes, I can escape a 4 star wanted level. I can escape, but I don't want to. Why? Because it's tedious, that's why. Sure, escaping two or 3 stars is relatively easy. But it isn't any fun for me because I find it, again, tedious. I absolutely hate the whole perimeter police concept, and think that GTA without Bribes and Pay 'n' Sprays that work ALL the time is not GTA at all. In many ways, GTA IV is a clone of the clones. It seems to me to be an amalgamation of The Getaway, Parallel Lines and Mafia with an amazing storyline and the classic radio stations thrown in.

Finally, Final Blade, we accept the game for what it truly is. It is an epic game in many ways, that in many other ways was also a huge let down. If anyone has a problem with "acceptance" around here it isn't us, it's you. You cannot seem to accept that we have criticisms of the game after being fans of the series for so long. I totally accept GTA IV for what it is, but that doesn't mean I have to like the things I hate about it just because you think we need to. You seem to have a huge problem accepting the taste of the individual gamer. NOBODY is telling you GTA IV sucks. Nobody is saying you have to dislike it. MOST people here, myself included, think GTA is amazing for what it is, but that it is also a huge let down in so many ways, TO US. Not to you, but to us. I know that iLLmatic, you, Game Masta and others love everything about this game, and I respect that. Me? I love a LOT OF things about this game and I hate a lot of things about it. What I hate most though is that this game, in my opinion, flies in the face of all that GTA used to be, and for no other reason than to be Gran Theft Turismo, GTA: Parallel Lines or Grand Theft Getaway. In other words, GTA IV is basically a clone of the clones in so many ways.
