Could GTA: Chinatown Wars be ported to iPhone?

Final Blade | September 23, 2008 | Rumor | DS Mobile
Well as you know GTA Chinatown Wars was a game in development for the DS, since to Rockstar it looked interesting platform to develop the game using the Stylus. However some news may make this game even more interesting. It seems another very possible candidate to make a GTA game on is Apple's very own iPhone. Since Rockstar is using the touch capabilities it couldn't be that difficult to port this game to the iPhone and use its touch screen possibilities. At least it seems this way to Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey.

However considering no official word has been released from Rockstar its best to label this as a rumor for now.
With sales of GTA IV slowing down lately, the EA bid for Take-Two officially over, the threat of Rockstar's Sam and Dan Houser potentially signing with another publisher, and Rockstar's own reluctance to bring GTA to Wii, the future of the GTA franchise has certainly been kept fresh in everyone's minds.

And while Wii isn't really being considered at Rockstar at the moment, another very popular platform could be: Apple's iPhone. With GTA: Chinatown Wars coming to the DS and making use of the touch screen later this year, it wouldn't be too difficult for Rockstar to bring the game to Apple's increasingly important (for gaming and other apps) iPhone, notes Janco Partners analyst Mike Hicke

    Will never happen =| EVER.

Considering the ds also has two-screens and considering that the iphone is very limited, i doubt we will ever see the game ported.

You'll probably get better graphics with the iPhone then the DS screens we have seen recently.

The iPhone is "very limited"? It has multitouch technology and motion controls alongside a processor that runs circles around even the PlayStation Portable. It has a higher resolution than the current handhelds and is capable of far superior graphics. Doesn't sound limited to me.

It also has no buttons. Seriously, the iPhone is going to succeed in gaming about as much as the N-Gage did, oh wait.

Yeah, just checked my friend's iPhone to be sure: no buttons except that one below the screen.

They'll put the buttons on the touch screen.

Are you kidding? That would not only clutter the screen, but the touch screen buttons wouldn't be nearly as responsive as physical buttons.

You'd be surprised how responsive the iPhone (or in my case, iPod Touch) is.

IF they do somehow get a GTA game onto the iPhone, it'll be a shitty example of one, and it'll put the others to shame. Bad move on Apple's part if they do it imo.

Funny, cause last time I checked GTA on the iPhone would probably play better and be better then GTA on the DS.

I love how you state that so matter-of-factly considering that the game isn't even out on the DS and there isn't even an iPhone version. Your inner anti-Nintendo fanboy is showing again Final Blade.

Funny, since you don't make any sense, as usual. Fact is I never stated it was confirmed that it was coming out for the iPhone. However take a look at this topicYou can see here that I was clearly defending the DS version, however given the facts Chiro and Steel presented, its ignorant to suggest the DS version of CW would be awesome in comparison to the PSP, PS3 and 360.

I don't hate nintendo, actually im a old fan of nintendo since the NES and SNES. So stop assuming shit, im just telling the facts that the iPhone has far better graphics and specs(hardware) then the DS. Not to mention more internal memory Space, which the DS lacks. All in all the DS version will probably look better then the screens we have seen, but hardly anything that compares to console versions and PSP. Sorry, to have a fullyfledge Grand Theft Auto game its going to need things that the DS doesn't have. iPhone is far better to support the Grand Theft Auto game.

If you had any knowledge of the specs and capabilities of the DS or iPhone you'd see that the DS is inferior. Sorry if you want to debate this further please post on that thread I linked you too, im sure ChiroVette and Steel would love to prove you wrong.

@Linkerd101 Its more then graphics actually, which the DS will not make a great system to have a good GTA. iPhone has better Specs in which it could(moreso) handle a true Grand Theft Auto, probably near the same quality as the PSP games. DS lacks this, its known fact.

@FinalFantasyFanaticc: Why can't the DS stay as a gaming handheld, intead of following Sony and Apple and making a mutlimedia handheld version?

Yea see how that can be switched around.

Final Blade, you are going way off topic. Who ever compared this game to the PSP, PS3, or 360 games? You do know that GTA started out as a 2D series, right? As such, this shouldn't be compared with the 3D ones directly, but rather the other 2D ones.

Back to the main issue: the DS game versus theoretical iPhone version. You stated earlier that GTA on the iPhone would play better than on the DS, which is just plain stupid. The iPhone has no face buttons so how could it possibly control well or play better than on the DS? Really, tell me. Sure, the iPhone has better graphics than the DS, but does that mean that this theoretical game will be better? No.

I don't even know why I'm defending this game; I'm no GTA fan. I suppose it's just that idiotic comments such as these compel me to purge Neoseeker and its affiliates of morons, but every time you post, you remind me that I will never be able to achieve this lofty goal.

You shouldn't try to purge any post, since you have no power over it. You clearly don't understand my point. I gave you a link showing you why this GTA game on the DS will simply not be a good game. Hell I even quoted some posts below your comment to back it up. GTA is no longer a 2D game. Were on the 3D realm of games. Im a big time GTA fan, and I know full well that GTA games started at 2D, but thats not the point of my posts. The point is to truly have a fully Fledge GTA game, thats up to the standards nowadays will simply not work due to the DS limitations where as the iPhone specs has better technology to(theoretically, using your words)have a fully fledged GTA game. Read my link post, read the examples by ChiroVette and Steel Magnolia and stop trying to think you know more then them. As I previously stated I've defended the DS version in that thread, but I've been proven wrong countless times. Stop trying to think I hate nintendo, cause I don't. Im a old time Nintendo fan, and been gaming since the NES, SNES days. Im a realist, and thats how I've always been when posting. Whether or not you agree doesn't negate the fact that the DS just has limitations that won't make a fully Fledged GTA game.

Talk about one big, rambling, incoherent paragraph without a clear focus.

I'm gonna try this one more time: GTA on the DS may not, and probably won't, be as good as GTA IV but that's not the point. This is about DS vs. iPhone. No matter how great the specs are on the iPhone, the game would play and control like shit due to the lack of buttons. Is it really that hard to comprehend what I'm saying? How much more do I need to dumb it down for you?

Now while your complaining about the DS's specs, let me remind you that this is a 2D game. I can't think of anything in the DS's hardware that would limit its ability to do good 2D. If you're gonna go around saying it's gonna suck just cause it's 2D, go ahead; that's your opinion. But it's because of pricks like you that 2D games are dieing.

You do know that GTA has been on the PSP and has sold lots?

I hardly see how that has anything to do with my point at all. The touch screen abilities can be made in such a way to have touch screen buttons via game. But, then again, I was merely talking about specs and how the iPhone(theorectically, something you missed again) can handle a fully fledge GTA game.

Hahaha pricks like me? First stop trying to flame me, since you clearly can't make a decent reply without resorting to flame and assuming im a fanboy. Second off, Im in no way making 2D games die, GTA is another can of beans to be dealing with for a game. Did you even bother to read that topic or are you just rambling more garbage assuming you think GTA on the DS could sell well? IIRC GTA 1 and 2 wasn't that great of games, maybe back in the day when it was on the PC, but at this day and age the GTA series are rated on such a level where that style will not and cannot make it great. This is fact. Go read the thread I linked you do and get educated on the fact GTA on the DS will not be good. Stop trying to prove me wrong when you clearly have yet to make a decent reply proving anything but how much you're unwilling yo accept that maybe, just maybe, im right here.

You're one to talk as well. Maybe when you're mature enough to handle a discussion like this on that topic I linked you to(twice already) then we can have a better discussion. You have no clue how Grand Theft Auto games are rated nowadays on the public, and trying to show you the light to someone unwilling to learn facts and come to understand for a fully fledged GTA game, CWs on the DS just cannot handle it due to its limitations.

Why can't Apple just stick to the stuff they have and not try to make a handheld gaming console that will just completly fail in t he market.

You know, I'll laugh my ass off if this game becomes a monstrous hit and we still having this same talk about how the DS can't handle GTA.
Do you honestly believe that this platform can seriously accommodate a full fledged GTA game? No offense to the DS, it is a fine handheld. But, seriously.
      quote ChiroVette
      quote Steel
I realise that GTA games have always had sub-par graphics compared to other games released at the same time but mark my words, the DS will not be able to handle a GTA game like the ones we have been accustomed to. It's nice that you have hope for this game, it really is. But just remember that Chiro and I called it, when it turns out to be crap
      Exactly.

It has nothing to do with the programming, but the limitations of the console. The DS has neither the system power nor the media storage capacity to run a bonafide GTA game, and no prettying it up or rationalization is going to make this a good game. The ONLY way that GTA on the DS will be a good game is grading on a curve and PRETENDING you are playing your N64. THis game is going to be a total and complete joke compared to modern GTA games.
Taken directly from these two people who makes sense. Its alot more then graphics, which was my point.
