Team Fortress 2, combat medic?

martinborgman | May 01, 2008 | Reviews | PC Playstation 3
A harsh but truthful review of the latest Team Fortress 2 update. The medic class has received a lot of new achievements. The player can complete these achievements to receive new weapons. A lot of the achievements are related to none medic behavior and is instead attracting statwhores who completely destroy the "Team" in "Team Fortress 2"
Some of the Medic achievements were dodgy at a first glance.

- ubering a scout
- getting a heavy to punch during an uber
- shooting people for an achievement
- bonesawing people for an achievement

And a lot more combat type of achievements. Now normally this wouldn't be a problem, because the medic also does combat in a normal round. But what is a problem that some of these achievements are impossible to complete if you play the medic as he should be played.

It's been quite fun since the update. It's degraded since it was released, but matches of medics versus medics are quite humorous.

This article is obviously written by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about. Medics aren't just a class where you sit back and heal. You're supposed to heal someone, then be able to escape (alive), and maybe get a few kills along the way. The new weapons merely open up the class to people who want to play the game, not sit in the back and hold the mouse down on someone. The medic class is now viable to a much larger amount of people, with no negative penalties to those who want to play it the only way it was possible last week. The guns aren't super-powered, either, but instead open up a larger number of play styles to senior players. The Blutsaughter is a weapon with NO CRITS, but instead is a vampire weapon, meaning (to all you stupid people who think "OH LOLLS THAT GUYS AN IDIOT HE THINKS THE GUN TURNS INTO A BAT AND SUCKS BLOOD LOL") that it does damage to the enemy and gives health to the holder. The Klitzkrieg is a medi-gun that gives 100% crit chance when you activate the uber charge. The Ubersaw gives you 25% uber charge when you hit someone with it, but swings 20% slower than the normal bonesaw. Nothing is without cost, and no achievements violate the premise of the class. All the achievements violate is what you thought the premise of the medic was.

Hmmm, doesn't that sound very similar to what I posted in the review...

"Now normally this wouldn't be a problem, because the medic also does combat in a normal round."

I also didn't speak badly about the new weapons, heck I didn't even mention them. This whole review is only about the achievements and the behaviour it produces. The new weapons are in fact a very nice addition and add variety to the class (TBH, which could be boring at times). The old weapons are still viable as well versus the new weapons. I'm just stating that valve screwed up in terms of achievements, which promote un-medic like behaviour...

A player is simply unable to complete a lot of the achievements by playing a normal round, with the old achievements this was possible. Also linking them to equipment is a bad "popular" idea which has failed in other games and the same happened here.

Read and understand before you go out and post nonsense (no pun indented)

I've got nearly 60 hours done with Medic, and likely did these achievements over the past few months but eh, it's more fun this way. Something so random as ubering a scout is challenging.

I agree with martinborgman. Medics are more than just sitting back and healing. It's working around the many players that need to be healed, assisting them, charging uber, manuevering, etc.. Truth be told, anyone with a minimal experience in the game knows to attack the medics first, that makes the medic's job twice as hard.
