You'd think that a game as highly anticipated as
Super Smash Bros Brawl would be getting nothing but stellar reviews. Despite the few
bugs and
online errors, the rest of the game appears to be stunning. But take a quick look at GameFAQs review section, and you will see quite a variety of positive and negative reviews from gamers who have the import, with the main complaint being, (not the online mode), but the step-back in gameplay from Melee...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is more aptly named Melee 1.1:
At the end of the day, it all boils down to one verdict: too much rehashing, and too little "new" content, filler aside. Of course, there's the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," but personally, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment. Franchises are meant to evolve, especially a 10-year-old one like Smash Bros. For those who wanted a Melee 1.1, that's great, but I'd rather have stuck to the original instead of shelling out another $50 for a limited upgrade.

All the greatness of Nintendo and its glory packed in one little disc:
This game is a tribute to the greatness that is Nintendo. Anyone can learn to master and love this game, much like how we veterans did back in 1999. This game will never lose its appeal, and will never become boring. The fun never stops when you're brawling with your friends, online or even alone. If there is one game that can compete with the top selling Wii game "Wii Play", it is this. Buy this game when it comes out in America. You won't regret it.

A great party game which, unfortunately, will not stand the test of time:
Don't let the genre fool you – Super Smash Brothers Brawl is not a fighting game. It is a party game, through-and-through; surprisingly similar to Mario Party, in fact. However, just like MP, its appeal will wear off after about a week of playing, and it's really doubtful that you'll ever find yourself coming back to it except for big occasions or some such. However, it is still a fantastic (probably unrivaled at this point) collection of Nintendo nostalgia and memorabilia all packed onto one disc. Tons of trophies, stickers, songs, and other items help give you more info about your favorite Nintendo character – as well as introduce you to a few you may not have even heard of!

First we Smashed, then Melee'd, and now, It's time ... TO BRAWL!:
The game doesn't add as much as Melee did to the original, and you might find that Melee was better for it's time. You still are getting a great game here. I'm not fond of the single player game and would have rather have had that development time used for characters. Online is great, but the "With Anyone" is only decent.

Alas! The third sibling of the trio of Smash Bros. is released... Does it live up to its hype?:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is worth a try, but you'll soon desire to go back to Melee's better gameplay and controls. This game is a huge letdown and definitely not what everyone expected.

The time when i was at Gamefaqs there were tons of Melee fans excited about this game, brawl. And now from the looks of it, most of them are disappointed. I mean they were flooding the forums, some huge Fanboys coming into the PS3 and 360 forums, gloating how Brawl will kill PS3 and 360. So for them to be disappointed is huge since i know how big the fanbase was at that site.
Still they weren't as good as Neoseeker, thats why i left
nothing new indeed.
mr 6/10 claims its a party game (its not - but apparently anything with 4 players is a party game), and boils it down to his/her personal opinion about how 'it wont last longer than a week' despite the fact that its barely even been out a week.
the positive reviews are just as unhelpful.
seriously. these guys is some professionals.
Completely customizable characters for Smash Bros? Are you serious? It's about video game icons fighting, it's not Soul Caliber or something.
And completely customizable characters in a game that's all about Nintendo (and some 3rd party) mascots? No thanks.
Just ignore them tho. They are sucky critics.
I'm waiting for the big reviews to come out. IGN, GameTrailers, etc.
I prefer to hear the opinions of average, everyday people (like me) over a bunch of "professionals" who get paid to have god-knows-what opinions. An example of this is Final Fantasy - When was the last time a FF game hasn't been considered "almost perfect" from a Pro Reviewer? Like, FFX-2 deserving of a 9/10? Hardly.
Many user-reviews seem to be more informative, un-biased and interesting to read than Pro Reviews anyways. They'll tell the straight facts. If they thought a game sucked, then they'll say it sucked. They're not getting any benefits out of saying a sucky game is good.
I got a lol out of the "What would they know anyway? GameFAQs members are all jackasses" post ... As though only the "jackasses" are capable of writing negative reviews. Because god-forbid a "nice" person doesn't consider the game to be as "perfect" as people are hoping.
These reviewers have played the game. I'm guessing that most (if not all) people here haven't played it. Who do you think is in a better position to write a review, be it negative or positive?
I personally don't place much faith in the reviews of a person who doesn't know my tastes, preferences, and interests. Reviews should be an unbiased overview of the game that points out what could be strengths and what could be flaws. The reviewer gives their opinion and an outline. Thus people are informed of what they can expect. What good does it do if a review is just a print of some gamer venting or loyally praising a game?
But hey, if people let complete strangers decide what games they buy, I won't do anything about it. Heh...
