MGO hands-on at the New York Comic Con

StarJet | April 21, 2008 | Previews | Playstation 3
ThatVideoGameBlog has got a Metal Gear Online hands-on demo at the New York Comic Con. According to what they say, the first good thing you would notice in this game is the graphics. Not really surprising, eh? They also describe character movements (Which is supposed to be slow and sluggish compared to other multiplayer games), controls (Similar to other Metal Gear games) and overall gameplay.
Undoubtedly one of the longest lines at this years NYCC was for Metal Gear Online. The former offshoot title, now multiplayer component of Metal Gear Solid 4, was the biggest game convention-goers were allowed to get some time with. After playing two rounds of it and watching numerous others, I can say that it’s … a mixed bag.

Four on four deathmatch was the name of the game. After a brief tutorial of the controls (standard for a Metal Gear game: L1 is enter aim mode, R1 is shoot, O is close quarter combat, etc.) we were let loose.

The first thing you notice is that the game is gorgeous. Player models are highly detailed, environments look vibrant, lived-in, and explosion effects are amazing. The map was a traditional urban setting - with lots of concrete blocks to find cover, a high up structure complete with catwalks and towers and an underground tunnel system.

MGO’s weapon system is much like Counter-Strike and a host of other tactical shooters. At the start of the game, you select your primary and secondary weapons along with a grenade type and you can switch those in between respawns. The weapons were pretty standard fare, ranging from sniper rifles and shotguns to machine guns and riot shields (!). Secondary weapons were merely two different pistol types, but they served their purpose. Grenades were a bit more varied, ranging from stun, flash bang and good old frag.

Yeah I played this yesterday, was pretty fun. I was a bit lost on where to go or who was my ally, though. xD Had fun going prone and such, had the MGS feel to it.

How did you play it? Was it like available for some time before it was temporarily disabled yesterday?

No, silly Starjet, I was at the Comic Con. Needless to say, I made quite a few noob mistakes, like standing out in the open and thinking that it was my partner behind me, and by the time I got the hang of things, I had to leave to check out a presentation. -_-

Really enjoyed it while it lasted, though. Got me even more psyched for MGS4, and the beta to be released.

          Oh, I see. Stupid me.
I really LOLed at the "thinking that it was my partner behind me" part.
Are there several teams or is it just two teams like CS?

From what we were doing it, it was just two teams. The demo was 'fixed' if I recall, so if there were more teams, it wasn't going to happen at the Comic Con.

Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I got shot from behind after turning my back to my "partner." xD I won't make that mistake for when the beta becomes more 'public' for us, I learned my lesson, heh.

This one opponent from the team loved playing tricks on me...he'd stand in front of me, look down, then up and shoot when I lowered my guard.

Bla bla bla game tactics were always going to be solid, the real question we need to have answered, Storm, is how are the new controls?!

The controls flowed alright, though by the time I started to get used to it's style, my time was up. -_- CQC was fun to try out (though there weren't many animations), and seemed more effective than shooting people, surprisingly it takes about a whole clip of a decent gun to kill them, videogameblog were right about that one.

Meh, anyone who's played MGS shouldn't take too long to get used to it's style, certainly not my 'run n' gun' style that I'm used to, but hella lot of fun.
