Grand Theft Auto IV Has Frame-Rate Issues

Krunal | April 16, 2008 | Previews | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
With just over a fortnight remaining till the game is released, it's about time that previews start coming for Grand Theft Auto IV. One of the recent previews has been from 1up.com, which has mentioned that

"You'll likely notice the same graphical ‘quirks’ that the series has dealt with since the jump to 3D. The same filmlike, grainy framerate exists and usually holds steady, but it can momentarily dip when things get frantic"

Of course those that have played previous iterations of the game, may be use to it, and/or may simply be interested in gameplay, though with the game being on the Next-Generation many would have hoped that the game would be relatively bug & frame-rate issue free.

However with that said, 1up also mentioned that even with these problems the game is well worth it, and their attempts at a 'cover-up' certainly works.

Read the full preview at the source for more details on the game.
Believe it or not, all of these notes barely scratch the surface. There's much, much more that can be said about GTA4 that you'll undoubtedly hear us and other outlets say as we get closer to (and even beyond) release.

Hardly frame rate issues, it is the same thing all games suffer from... The game runs perfectly fine until it gets hectic and by hectic they mean like 9 cars blowing up at the same time, or 8 rocket launchers going off at once something that is obviously going to slow down most games, this is nothing major.

I have read previews and they have highlighted those as the only times the game slows down... Quit trying to be a smartass.

better be better than 8 rockets or 9 cars....16 player multiplayer will have plenty of moments like that.

I really doubt it's serious though. People said this about Mass Effect as well and I never had any trouble with it...ever

Yeah, it's just something to try and bring it down...at least they are finding cons for this game.

Mass Effect ran pretty damn smooth for me, as well.

That isn't a framerate matter, that's just slowdown on the CPU or the game not managing to read fast enough. All games get it when there's a lot to process. For example Mass Effect, the game had a great framerate but had trouble loading things, which meant it got slowdown, when running around in a fully-loaded area the game had great framerate.

@ slumpy.. what does that have to do with anything?

to hell with 1up, they say every goddamn game has framerate issues

they sparked the whole orange-box-is-unplayable-on-ps3, which turned out false

Well it's not framerate I'm worried about as much as the pop-in. THAT I do care about. Nothing more annoying than driving(especially an aircraft) at high speed than hitting something before it even loads so you can see it. That was one thing that's always been annoying in GTA games.

Well, I don't mind a bit of framerate.
    Freezing screens are much worster.

Well, nobody likes it that their game freezes up on them while playing the game, right?

Frame rate issues? i thought games had gone well beyond frame rate issues long ago. Still what they are sayign doesn't make the game sound bad by any means..

I don't think there has ever been a game that hasn't had some frame rate problems.
Considering one reviewers gave it a perfect score, than i say its hardly an big issue.

Yeah it's not an issue to the extent it ruins the game but can get really annoying. Especially if the frame rate gets as bad as the PSP GTAs did in some parts of the games, then yeah that's when it starts getting really annoying.

But I'm worried even more about the pop-in. That was one thing I hoped they would fix in the GTA games eventually. That gets even more annoying. Hell I don't encounter that pop in crap in Saint's Row so it obviously can be accomplished.

Its 1-up surely who takes anything they say seriously?

They talk BS almost every time, like those FF7 remakes.
