Can Stardock's Elemental become the Master of Magic?

herdon | December 01, 2008 | Previews | PC
A look at Stardock's new 4X strategy game Elemental: War of Magic. Ever since Master of Magic set a new standard for fantasy-based strategy games, developers have tried to knock it off the mountain. Stardock might succeed based on innovative ideas like a persistent multiplayer world hosted by Stardock and the Spore-like ability to share player-created creatures, resources, technologies and more.

    quote Wikipedia
Hopes were raised when news began of companies like Quicksilver Software and Stardock picking up the rights to produce a [Masters of Magic] sequel. They were dashed when the deals fell through, as the companies were unable to reach an accord with Atari's demands for full control of the software's marketing. Game Informer claimed in its November 2007 issue that Stardock will be targeting a remake of Master of Magic for 2009. However, "kryo" of Stardock has clarified in their own forums that Game Informer is mistaken. The 2009 project is a creation of Stardock's own, and had already been unveiled in their 2007 interview with Gamasutra as a "part Master of Magic, part Populous and part X-Com" game.

If anyone is up to the job, it is Stardock. Though from what I read, they are really trying to make something different from MoM, so I'm not sure if it is a fair comparison.
