French reviewer absolutely destroys Fallout 3!

Silver Mirror | October 15, 2008 | Previews | PC Playstation 3
Could Bethesda really have fallen so far? French magazine CanardPC certainly seem to think so. In a review (but technically a preview for some reason I don't quite understand) of Fallout 3, the reviewer as well as making several snide remarks about the company's treatment of him brutally bashes the game. From the level design to the colour pallet he barely mentions a single positive thing. Rather strange considering the almost universally positive impressions.
The more time passes, the more I feel like this dog, barking and foaming at every car that happens to be passing by. I run after them, trying to bite their wheel rims, to crush their tires, their muffler, but I miss. They are going too fast, too far from me. And even if I succeeded ? What would happen anyway ? I bite a moving wheel, it stomps my face, I assault some scrap, it smashes my teeth. Some things are so lifeless, so sluggish that you can't possibly let off steam on them. Fallout 3, anyone ?

This article is not a test. Just an "introduction for things to come". Why? Because the conditions under which I had to play this "RPG" were not acceptable: sixteen hours in a row in a luxurious hotel on an almost finished build, Bethesda asking to see my screenshots in order to "approve" them...These factors, going from obnoxious to truly scandalous would have made my review biased or even dishonest. Well, I mean a little more dishonest than what I usually do. But have no fear, even though I was deprived of my screenshots, I'm not deprived from my opinion. Condolences: Fallout 3 is a sluggish device, soulless, not exactly terrible, actually almost enjoyable, but totally forgettable because of uncountable dishonest compromises.

From what I've seen, Fallout 3 does not have any of the qualities of the previous episodes. But that was to be expected. However, it has none of the diffuse magic of the Elder Scrolls series. It feels like Bethesda made a break with this new title, a sad bend towards products multiplying "fan service", the dumb, goofy stuff that will make the client laugh, the "awsum roxxorz" elements and micro-gameplay to the detriment of world coherence and deeper mechanisms. To sum it all up, expect loads of shallow combat spoiled by VATS and slowmotion sequences as gore as pathetic, a terribly short main quest - a Spanish colleague has finished it in less than an afternoon, during his first playthrough - nice secondary quests, but which completely missed the intelligence and density of the series, the whole being flavored with failed occasions.

With technical means a lot inferior, Fallout 1 and 2 managed to depict this world in all its rococo excess and misery in a formidable manner. But no, despite the dismantled bridges, the huge depth of field, the buildings trying their best not to fall down, it just does not work. By the way, when I came back to CanardPC and people asked me "How is Fallout 3?", honestly, all that I could say at first was "Brown". These ochre shades smash, make the most eccentric idea - let's say, why not, the Washington area transformed into a battlefield scarred by trenches - bland, commonplace, immediately boring. Even worse, where the atmosphere of decay should have been palpable, when you are walking in a city overflowed by skyscrapers ruins, disembowelled roads, peopled by half-savages, one can focus on but one thing: ruins placed strategically to prevent you from crossing the street because designers decided that you shouldn't take THIS path.

I hope the reviewer was just tired. I look forward to get Fallout 3 and I must admit I'm not at all encouraged from the screens/videos I've seen so far. Reviews as the one above don't help too much, either.

I also hope this guy was tired. Not buying it, knowing how much care BethSoft put into this, I don't know.. this remains my most anticipated game this month (Though I must admit Web of Shadows and Dead Space rocked my world last night)

For one, the French are critical about everything so I'm not taking this preview seriously at all. Secondly, it's exactly that, a preview. This guy had absolutely none-to-little time to play the game and was probably rushed as well. He seemed to make a lot of comparisons to other games as well rather than focusing on what the game presented on its own as a whole.

P/reviews are hard not to be biased, we need to judge for ourselves by playing it (:

Tekmosis, thank you so much for saying that. I wanted to say that the French are critical about a great many things, but my French friends would have castrated me. 12 more days man! 12 MORE DAYS! Can not wait!

OK no more French bashing. France being that stand up country that took the lead during WW2..... OK,.... I'm finished laughing. Anyway I have seen the documentaries on XBL, and what I have seen the reviewer may have some points. Big sandbox games are created for the explorer gamer. If you just complete the main quests and that's all, you will probably finish the game early. If you were expecting the charm that was Fallout 2 then I guess you may be disappointed. The previews do seem to state that using VATS you can kill almost any opponent the game throws at you, to some that might not be very fun. If you don't use it then you are probably going to die a lot. Games have to strike a balance of not making things too easy or too difficult. If VATS make it like playing in GOD mode then the reviewer may have a point. I think some games are taking the "Gears" type of graphics a little too far some time. It doesn't have to look like Halo, but jeez give me some color... I didn't buy a HD for nothing. All things said I'm still buying the game but not until a few quality reviews come out so I know WHEN to buy it. I don't want another "Alone in the Dark moment" That game sucked.

This reminds me of the French judge who almost screwed the Canadian figure skating team out of the gold a few years ago.

The cover of the magazine states it is a preview not a review. Canard PC is a very respected bi monthly mag famous for its independence and its 30yo reviewers who are writing for adults. I personally love this mag for the quality of their writing. It is witty , intelligent and funny. Among the writers there is one who excels by his very humorous writing and metaphoric bashing of bad games. His name is Omar Boulon ( Omar Bolt) and he is the one who wrote that article. Canard PC said to have a bad feeling about the game since E3. The cover of the current issue says "Fallout 3: we believed in it, but it is over." Well... now I am crossing my finger for far cry 2

It seems to me, from what you just stated and from the preview itself, he went into it with a negative perception to start with and thus made the review biased. You should try the game for yourself rather than dismissing it as well, because of this preview.

There is an emargo so I can't comment on the game itself, but I will say based on my own experience yesterday through last night, I don't agree with the article at all.
