Fallout 3's Successful Launch: $300 Million!

Mishtram | November 09, 2008 | Press Release | PC Playstation 3
Bethesda has a lot to celebrate, especially with the successful launch of their newest title, Fallout 3, which did amazingly well, with total sales surpassing the 300 million dollar mark not too long ago, according to a recent press release from Bethesda Entertainment.

This is in addition to news that it was the top seller in the UK and also surpassed both sales of all it's predecessors combined and Oblivion, the game which was another of Bethesda's largest hits and which contains many of the same elements to it's engines as Fallout 3 built upon.
Hailed as one of the most anticipated games of 2008, Fallout 3 received a 10 out of 10 review score from Official Xbox Magazine, a result then repeated around the world with perfect scores by some of the industry’s most influential and respected critics including: Gamespy, GamePro, UGO, the Associated Press, MSN, The Washington Post, Guardian, FHM, Scripps Howard, G4-TV, The Toronto Star, MSN, and Eurogamer. MSNBC’s review offered the observation that it viewed “Fallout as a no-brainer for game of the year.” The Daily Star in the UK echoed that conclusion, saying “You can hold all bets on game of the year – I think we have a winner.”

The successful launch of Fallout 3 by Bethesda Softworks follows the success of The Elder Scrolls® IV: Oblivion®, which remains one of the highest scoring games ever published and earned “Game of the Year” honors in 2006. Fallout 3 has been featured on over 100 magazine covers across the globe and is available in eight languages. The initial retail shipments of Fallout 3 included both the Regular version of the game as well as a limited “Collector’s Edition.” A Fallout 3 Official Game Guide in both the regular and collector’s edition versions has also been a strong seller. Fallout 3 is slated for release in Japan on December 4th.

Somehow this seems like a shallow victory, i mean it shows how making a hardcore gamers franchise can earn lots of money but i would love to see it sell this many copies and make this much if they kept the tried and tested gameplay of old.

^Well, I've seen videos of the orginal fallout, and tbh, it didn't interest me at all. A 2D world with your character being little more than a sprite? Honestly, I feel that 3 is a big imrovement over 1 and 2, mainly due to its highly engrossing gameplay.

Heres to that. They deserve what they get. With MGS4, easily GOTY.

Anyone can make money by watering down a franchise from one of the hardest RPG's to one of the easiest on the planet today, Fallout was great, Fallout 2 was great and the original now cancelled Fallout 3 was great, Bethesda came along and changed all that and made Oblivion: Nuke Edition, it's shallow because until now 90% of gamers had never heard of Fallout before and now it's the "next big thing" they had to change the series and go against it's roots which is really quite terrible.

Means little tbh. As long as the game sells(and its a great game) and everyone likes it, who gives a shit. I still don't agree with your post. I don't feel this a shallow victory, they made a title which was apparently awesome and everyone is enjoying it.

How was fallout 2 original? There were tons of games that used that type of gameplay.

The game mechanic's had become outdated, what's the point in releasing a new game if it was going to be outdated and not do the series justice?

The aim to making games is money, not "Keeping it true".
