Disgaea 3 scans, new "heroes" revealed

Wolfwood | August 28, 2007 | Other | Playstation 3
Scans for the Disgaea 3 cover feature of Japanese magazine Dengenki PlayStation have surfaced thanks to nenena of LiveJournal, and they provide a tasty glimpse of the latest batch of Netherworld residents looking to start something. The main character is a "Netherworld honor student" named Mao, and it seems he already has rivals in the "Netherworld Delinquint" Raspberyl and "self proclaimed Hero" Almaz. Check out the source link for more scans. Meanwhile, the official site (Japanese) will open this September 21st.

Translations for key points of the article have also been graciously provided:
- Mao was designed with "mad scientist" look in mind.
- Raspberyl is Mao's rival to be best student. She wants to surpass him no matter what. (...Yet her title is...)
- Almaz is a HERO OTAKU hahaha. He sounds really timid in the screenshots, or perhaps not very confident. This goes with "Lame Hero" that's written next to him in one of the scans. Also, he might have something to do with the white haired lady ontop, because there's reference to a "princess he wants to protect" in his description.

- Eringa, Merchant girls *(PB), Chefs* (MK), and Saber Kitties (PB) are back.

*Unsure of what their class titles are in this game.

- Combos are diagonal now.
- Succubus are back (they REALLY look like Prier D: )
- Mao's father is an Overlord, and he's his only child.
- Almaz is a "self proclaimed Hero". Hahaha. ( 自称勇者 )
- Mao considers Almaz his "target" ...uh? (Could be the other way around. Almaz considers Mao his target)
- Almaz uses rather polite Japanese.
- Apparently Mao and Almaz are rivals by nature.
- Mao's title is Netherworld's Honor Student
- Mao's glasses show he's a youngster. Can't forget correcting your vision in your youth! I guess?
- Raspberyl's title is "Netherworld Delinquint"
- Almaz's title is "Hero"
- Mao's title is "Netherworld's Honor Student"

CUZ ITS THE TIME FOR NEXT GEN!

Sucks to be you, if you don't have a PS3 -_-

In any case, very happy to hear more details I hope it doesn't take as long (re: 6 months or more), to get here upon the official release in Japan...

In any case, we don't really know whats going to happen...is it a simple rivalry (doubtful)? Or is there going to be something going on behind the scenes, and the *ahem* 'heros' will need to unite, and work together to solve it?

In any case, I want it

BTW: I really don't like the Chef class...but I do like the Sabre Kitties (whats wtih the description in game, about them having 'disappointing weak hits'? THEY PWN!?!? (Good enough power, and good movement)...

Nekomatas, I hope they return too (Fave monster class, I like "Fists of Fury" the most

What exactly, pray tell, do you see the need for "next-gen" for a game like Disgaea?

Stop bitching, last time I checked Nippon Ichi owned Disgaea, not you, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. If you want the game, get a PS3, if not, go replay the first 2 while everyone else enjoys the majesty of Disgaea 3.

Look a lot of early PS2 games didn't require PS2's power either, but they are MOVING ON TO THE FUTURE...

      Thats the whole point...

And this way, they can jam more music, and worlds (maps) into it...and hopefully more features, and FULLY ANIMATED anime style cutscenes (you know, Anime FMVs)...

      BTW: Zero and X, "Nippon Ichi" isn't someone's name (though I can see how you'd think that)..."Nippon Ichi" = Japan's Best...Thusly, "Nippon Ichi Software" = Japan's Best Software ^_~

Blu-Ray makes pixelated sprites more extreme. Right. This is something a PR person says.

SPOILERS: Disgaea already has an infinite amount of maps. It's called the Item World.

You think they'll just let their sprites look pixelated like that? No doubt they'll do something about smoothing them out...after all, they KNOW they are developing it for the PS3...jeez, pretty bad point you're making there...its not like they are just going to treat it like its just a PS2...They ARE going to make it at least 720p you know, and they'd realise they'd have to do something about smoothing as a result...its not hard for even a smaller developer like NIS to solve >_>

STORY/BONUS maps (obviously) jeez...another pathetic argument on your part >_>

Uhhhh...that was just the one (unless you want to count the credits)...I'm talking about a bunch of cutscenes like that (at least one every chapter end), not just the one.

Jeez, I had a easy rebuttal for every one of your points.

Dood...you're trying to argue with a NIS veteran (I have La pucelle, Disgaea 1, Disgaea 2, Phantom Brave, and Makai kingdom)...There is pretty much nothing you can tell me about any of those games, that I don't already know.

Dude, those scans make the game look pretty complete to me. Developers do the worst bullshit for the obvious things. I've seen it. (HI KONAMI!)

Buddy, look at those maps. They look no better than what you saw in Disgaea 2. Do you really think they'll add bump-mapping to affect gameplay?

Have any NIS games past Disgaea 1 or 2 started to included an animated cutscene?

Yeah, well, you're totally overlooking the fact as to how overkill things are looking already. The idea seemed overkill at first but now with screens, it's definitely apparent.

You'd think NIS would recognize the potential in making their game on a console largely owned by AMERICANS in their 30s who usually play shooters or racing games.

Didn't NIS also say they'd spread to other consoles? DS Disgaea is fine and all but it'd compliment something the 360 SORELY needs.

Well, I don't know if the screens are complete...perhaps you're right, and they are still going to have pixelated characters...all NIS tactical RPG games have been like that, I never cared.

WTF? What does that argument (about bumps to affect gameplay) have to do with MORE maps...as in, maybe 30 chapters with something like a half dozen maps per chapter on average...OK, maybe not that much...but more bonus maps would be good...they have the space, I hope they use SOME of it at least.

Uhhh come again? Disgaea 2 had the animated opening, albiet not a cutscene...but it is a natural progression, since they don't have to worry about space constraints, they can pretty much add as many animated cutscenes as they are capable of making (its a small dev, so they probably won't make THAT many I admit)...They haven't made too many games since D2...Not another disgaea type game (remake of D1 doesn't count).

You DO know that NIS is a JAPANESE developer right? Why would they design it for americans?

    NIS is going on 360

It's not that they're designing it for Americans, it's that Americans are the dominant base!

      Says who? An American (You?)?

So it has a cult fanbase here in North America, the fact remains, it was developed in Japan first...
