PS3 Version Of Fallout 3 Has No Mandatory Install

Linkin Park Fan | May 27, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
Finally! A lot of people have been complaining about all these mandatory installs. And its good to see a company get things right. Fallout 3 will not have any mandatory installs. So that will free up space for the other mandatory installs.
Most PlayStation 3 owners are fully aware of this growing trend of the mandatory install. Several of the most popular games to date have required the gamer to sit and wait for 5-10 minutes while a certain amount of data is stored on the hard drive. Grand Theft Auto IV, Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds and Devil May Cry 4 are just three recent examples.

So we're used to it. But that doesn't mean every major title is going to require an install before play. According to TheGameReviews, Bethesda has said there will not be any such thing for their upcoming and highly anticipated game, Fallout 3.

"We do not do that, no. We put the stuff down there that we need to be there, we can stream it in and out of there but we do not do the ‘we need ten minutes of your time.’ We will cache the same way on both (Xbox 360 and PS3) we basically just like everybody you know if you have a hard drive, it does this."

Bethesda did this in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, too. So at least there will be one big-time title this year that won't require any extra space on the HDD, although we probably shouldn't complain. Even though MGS4 will take 4.6GB of space, that won't be a problem for most PS3 users. The system hasn't been out that long, first of all, and second of all, with HD sizes of 40, 60, and 80GB, it might take a little while to actually fill 'em up.

people dont seem to realise why companies do these installs

reading data off a blu-ray disk takes a bit longer then a DVD9
these installs cut down load times by doing this,it helps with large games
GTA4 for example has some shorter load times and less pop-in at a loss of 3 gigs of HDD

i wish people would stop bitching, its not like ps3 HDDs aren't upgradeable

      My god, THANK YOU.

"And its good to see a company get things right." What are you talking about dude? People just love to nitpick and complain every chance they get, not even caring to realize when someone is doing them a service. What, do you think companies have a mandatory install because they are lazy or because they don't know what they are doing?

Its about time someone besides iLL knows what the *bleep* their talking about. God its annoying sometimes how people have no clue why the installs are needed.

All I have to say to you guys is: Uncharted.

No installs what so ever and no loading time what so ever. Except for when loading your game from the start menu.

Preaching to the choir. I've brought up Uncharted several times in response to Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet. However, you have to realize that different companies have different resources, different engines, and different gameplans altogether. Some things work better for one company, whereas another will take a different route. More often than not, an installation is necessary, based on the structure of the PS3, in accordance with all of the above dynamic aspects.

Well, this is good. Providing it doesn't sacrifice anything aside from load times (it shouldn't sacrifice quality, I'm quite sure)....

It doesn't have a mandatory install, but it might have an optional one, perhaps?

Waits for Fallout 3 on the PS3 to have screen tearing and framerate drops, further more pushing the need for mandatory installs and doing nothing bad for those that hates these installs.

Edit: Love getting thumbed down for something that is bound to happen, they only do these installs to cope with the slow disc format... Blu-Ray is slow when the file size is large, you don't think they make these installs mandatory to spite every PS3 owner do you?

You get thumbed down cause people are trigger happy, besides not liking your comment which speaks the truth.

You ever play Oblivion on the PS3? The one that didn't do a mandatory installation? That was a god-awful trip, with the constant, stuttering framerate everywhere you went all the time...Wait, that didn't happen did it?

The game was unstable, had to constantly load every 3 minutes when you hit a new bit of landscape this caused the game to stutter, texture draw in was poor for anything further than 6 steps away from your character, vegetation population was low on the console versions they had to make quite a few cuts to get the game to run smoothly and even then it was hardly without fault... Yes great endorsement for no installs.

Unstable? The loading lasted a SECOND OR TWO at the very least before you could go on your merry way. Hardly a problem at all, in fact, when you visited the same areas there was no loading as well.

Oblivion actually looks cleaner on PS3 than 360 and runs smoothly. I don't know where you're coming from.

Oh i apoligise for having played all 3 versions and finding issues with all 3, i admit there were fewer issues with the PS3 version incomparison to the 360 version but they did have a year longer to optimise, with that in consideration it was a year wasted as the game still has many pitfalls on the PS3, i guess i have pretty high standards when it comes to how smooth a game is... I mean stutters when the game loads new textures, and a poor draw distance are just two things i don't tolerate others perhaps are slightly easier...
