Metal Gear Solid sneaks onto N-Gage as Nokia secures distribution of KONAMI mobile games

Xenctuary | May 25, 2008 | News | Mobile
An enhanced version of Metal Gear Solid Mobile, originally released March 2008 in North America by Verizon, has been announced for Nokia's N-Gage mobile gaming platform.

Unique additions to the title include an in-game camouflage system that utilises the phone's camera and unlockable achievements in the form of N-Gage Point Pickups.

Furthermore, Nokia will be the sole distributor of all future KONAMI mobile titles. These will be made exclusively available for purchase on all compatible Nokia Nseries devices via the N-Gage Store.
Nokia and KONAMI, a leading global developer, publisher and manufacturer of electronic entertainment properties, today announced that KONAMI mobile titles will be added to the N-Gage mobile games platform. The mobile version of the award-winning METAL GEAR SOLID® will be the first title in the games line-up. METAL GEAR SOLID® MOBILE has received top honours at the 2007 International Mobile Gaming Awards (IMGA), taking both the Grand Prix and Operator's Choice Awards.

The new version of the classic game features original content that can only be found on the mobile platform. METAL GEAR SOLID® MOBILE includes never-before-seen dramatic 3D art displays and camera work. The detailed in-game graphics capture the atmosphere of the METAL GEAR SOLID® series and create a depth that completely draws the player into the game, and pushes the capabilities of the mobile platform. Players face the extreme tension of solitary infiltration in this version of the tactical espionage action game developed in conjunction with Ideaworks3D and utilizing its Airplay 3.5 SDK. An in-game camouflage system utilizes colour samples from the scenery of the real world captured by the handset's camera. Moreover, additional controls are introduced that are made especially for mobile devices.

Does anyone even REMEMBER the N-Gage? That thing was a failure since day 1.

You're confusing the N-Gage "Game Decks" of yesteryear with the current generation of N-Gage, which is a surprisingly well implemented gaming platform that runs on most Nokia Nseries devices.

I thought the pictures would have given that away

The N-Gage application is a free download, by the way. It comes pre-installed on newer Nseries firmwares.

They brought back the software platform for gaming with acceleration on specific handsets. It's no different from having a dedicated carrier offer cell phone games to you at this point.

Bringing it back made sense since the mobile gaming market and casual markets are huge these days. Why not infuse your own phone with gaming capability since everyone else is doing the same.

You act as if they brought back the hardware platform, maybe having a read of the article would have been of use.

Though people are talking like bringing back the hardware platform would be a bad thing, i mean these days you can pack so much power into a cell phone... N-Gage would actually work and with 3G and high speed mobile broadband, the dedicated N-Gage would be much like it is in the N series of phones just with more grunt as it would be downloadable games but with the power of something like the PSP, not like it was 4 years ago with the N-Gage trying to play 3D games with the hardware of a Gameboy Colour.

Well the goal of the company in 2006 was integrating higher end processing power into their more elite models for gaming and multimedia basically trying to make a series of phones capable of being N-Gage systems instead of just pushing one model for the general public. Using a universal system of technology though also allows for them to reduce costs and focus on design aesthetics.
