Metal Gear Solid's 90 minute long cutscenes ... so are they true or false?

Gothic Girl | May 24, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
The 90-minute-long cutscene rumor in Metal Gear Solid 4 just won't be put to rest.

Yesterday CVG announced that the game will have 90 minute long cutscenes, though Gamepro editor Sid Shuman was quick to debunk the rumor.
But it seems as though that hasn't quelled fan's fears of sitting through movie-length cutscenes.
As mentioned in the article... both CVG and Sid have played the game, so why are they saying different things?
Some fans have taken Shuman's word for it, while others are more inclined to believe the original source.
Metal Gear Solid fans have been met with confusion in the last few days as to whether Guns of the Patriots will include cutscenes that last for over 90 minutes.

The rumor began at PSW magazine who claimed:

quote PSW mag
"MGS4's story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather
movies
on one disc,"

"As you'd expect, you'll spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes, so if you found previous games' story exposition laborious, then you'd better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4's".

This was later confirmed by computerandvideogames.com.

However Gamepro's Sid Shuman soon got hold of the rumor and was quick to cite is as false:

quote Sid
"Ninety-minute-long cinemas in MGS4 sounds like an exaggeration. Like the other
MGS games, MGS4 definitely has a cinematic quality. And yes, some of the
cut-scenes in the game are elaborate and occasionally lengthy. But not a one, to
my recollection, even approaches 90 minutes".

So who are the fans to believe? Both Sid Shuman and PSW Magazine have played and reviewed Guns of the Patriots yet both say different things.

Games Equal Life are leaning towards PSW's review for the sole reason that Shuman does not sound so sure of his reasonings.

I hope they're not 90-minutes long, the one near the end of Metal Gear Solid 2 was bad enough for me.

The one at the end of MGS2 was 45 minutes long ... imagine sitting through one that's double the length

Play the Xenosaga series, then you'll know what uber-long cutscenes with non intermissions are all about. MGS4 is likely going to have a few long cutscenes, but I doubt it'll have anything that reaches 90 minutes straight. If it's 90 minutes total however, or around that, i'll actually be a bit dissapointed. I'd expect at least 120' for a PS3 game.

The total, for the whole game, is about 9 hours (540 minutes)....

I'm sure they won't actually do 90 minute cutscenes, but I'm sure 25/30 minutes isn't out of the question....

I kinda hope that they aren't 90 minutes. It's just too long. What if you just want to play the game for a little bit? Some people may never have 90 minutes to just sit and play (or sit and watch in this case)

Well does it acutally matter if they are 90 min long or 30 min long if you are gonna get the game then get it.

WHY do people forever insist on stepping into a discussion and asking, "Who cares?" It obviously matters because we don't want to sit through a movie in the middle of a game.

My thoughts exactly iLLmatic. I do indeed believe that the cutscenes will reach 90 minutes. It's something Hideo would have no problem doing.
I just hope it's not all stock footage of New York City with Snake talking about the philosophy of life like in MGS2. That bored the crap out of me. I've no problem with long cutscenes if they are worth watching. I would'nt sit through a film if I think it's crap half way through so this'll be no different. If I start yawning during a cutscene then I'm reaching for the Sixaxis and pressing the X button.

    The point is, they're skippable.

No, that is not the point. Actually that has nothing to do with it. I don't skip cutscenes in any game I play, because thats like only reading half a book and then bullshitting on the summary. The point is, when you're into a game, a lengthy cutscene can take away your adrenaline. Now, as a long time Metal Gear Solid fan, I have no problems with longer-than-most cutscenes, but 90 minutes is overkill. After a scene was done, I wouldn't want to play anymore.

Well, in any case, I'd take the word of someone who's played the game than a magazine who's talking about a preview or something. Odds are the longest cutscene is around 30 minutes to 40.

If you'd read the article, you'd know that both the PSW magazine and the Gamepro guy have played the game.

I may be well happy to see 90 minutes of MGS cutscenes. But it seems a little too much, however.

Not "90 minutes of cutscenes". They're talking about "90 minute long cutscenes"
