There will be more Metal Gear after MGS4!

Gothic Girl | May 20, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
Metal Gear Solid 4's Associate Producer, Ryan Payton, announced that the Metal Gear games will be continuing after MGS4, just without Solid Snake.

Payton revealed that, even if Kojima came back to the MG series and wanted to bring back Solid Snake, it would be impossible due to MGS4 tying up every loose end in Solid Snake's story.

Fans were expecting this, but having it confirmed is the final nail in the coffin.
The last adventure of Solid Snake is almost ready for gamers. It’s been a long time coming — more than four years of development — but on June 12, “MGS4″ will finally become a reality on PlayStation 3s worldwide.

Fans can stop worrying, though; this isn’t the last “Metal Gear,” explained associate producer Ryan Payton in an interview with MTV Multiplayer. “I think there’s been some misconceptions that this is the last ‘Metal Gear,’” said Payton. “This is really just the last chapter of the saga of the Solid Snake story.”

“[Solid Snake] was a burden [for Kojima] because of all those loose ends,” said Payton. “So when you play “Metal Gear Solid 4″ and when you get to the end, I think you’re going to feel that ‘wow, this is a nice closure.’ All of the weird stuff that’s gone on in the past, it’s all coming to an end. All those weird questions — everything is answered.”

Bah, this should have been expected. No company likes to stop milking a very popular franchise even if their life depended on it. But I don't think Metal Gear without Snake will be as good as that with Snake.

Lets be honest, who didn't see this coming? A popular francise isn't just going to be dropped like this. Spin-offs, almost certainly starring Raiden were obvious.

More Metal Gear or not, this is my last Metal Gear. I've been waiting for a series closure for a while and now I've got it. No sense starting a new one and getting wrapped up in that one just to have it drag on for another 20 years. No another Metal Gear game would be the equivalent of having an Episode VII in the Star Wars saga - pointless.

I thought this was confirmed awhile ago.
Well like Donnelly said who didn't really see this coming?

Hopefully Metal Gear won't lose it's spark with Solid Snake no longer being in the game.

Guess this slightly confirms Snake's death in MGS4?

It'll likely be a different series altogether, just with quite a few similar concepts, so no, it won't be like a 7th episode of Star Wars, reaver, that is different. Like a new PoP for it's latest game.

Remember Metal gear didn't start with Solid Snake anyway. It was Metal gear Solid that introduced us to Solid Snake and his brothers. Raiden is one possible choice for a future protagonist. However they could always create another caracter with a completely different story line that we have never seen before.

I think the key feature is really more along the lines of whoever the protagonist is he has to be working to stop the next generation of Metal Gear. That tends to be the real point of Metal gear rather than who is doing the stopping. The character just makes for a more interesting story beyond the main plot.

Metal Gear DID start with Solid Snake (against Big Boss himself). Solid's been in every MG/S game except for the third game (and Portable Ops, but that's more like an expansion of MGS3).

Seeing more of Raiden would be pretty cool if he was to become the new protagonist. Playing as Gray Fox in the past (before he was made into a cyborg ninja) would be pretty cool too.
