theundertakergonzo | May 16, 2008 | News | Wii
So the Wii Fit has a measure on it for BMI. Some children have had their readings come in as "fat". Nintendo have issued a long statement of apology to the people who have had it happen to them.
Nintendo has apologised to those offended by Wii Fit after the software came under fire for dubbing children "fat".

Update: Nintendo has issued CVG its full statement regarding Wii Fit complaints: ""Nintendo would like to apologise to any customers offended by the in-game terminology used to classify a player's current BMI status, as part of the BMI measurement system integrated into Wii Fit.

"The BMI classifications featured within Wii Fit are universal, standard measurements widely used within the medical and fitness profession. We have used BMI and its associated terminology as the in-game measurement in Wii Fit as it is a widely recognised indicator of a healthy weight range since it measures a player's weight, scaled to their height.

"As such it is the best available generic measurement that can assess a
player's progress whilst using Wii Fit. The different classifications applied in Wii Fit are those used officially with BMI.

If they named it that, it would be funny, yet nobody would buy it, and nintendo would suffer an even greater loss, than it has already had in the past, and present.

They shouldn't have to apologize. They are all overreacting, I'll say it again, its just a game, not a special tool of some sort.

Agreed. Wii fit is not going to be accurate. The game is just for fun, and it's most likey not to insult anyone, especially with the many blows happening to nintendo.

Yeah. How would a game system know your BMI. It's not like a doctor or anything that can learn that. I really don't know why people are overeacting about a game =P.

Hah don't worry this isn't a sincere apology, its basically the equivalent of saying "we don't like you we think your completely unreasonable and were not willing to do anything to make you feel better but we'll say sorry just to shut you up"

Sony did the same thing in the Resistance Manchester Cathedral Case

"We're sorry to have made a fun game that so many people are buying, and playing, and we deeply apologize for it calling you fat." Lol.

Lol. It is just a game...if it tells you you are fat, its a ploy to get you to tell others to get the game to test if they are fat...omg!

lol @ the possibility of some 250 Pound dude reading this and saying "It's your fault I'm fat in the first place."

I doubt that the game is going to 100% be accurate. So I doubt that anyone should be offended. It is just a game, and the game is to give you a decent idea. If it says, "You're Fat," then it must mean that, and it must be a breakdown moment. If you aren't fat and it says that, then it's their fault.

    Simple as that =P
