Xbox ‘540’ coming in 2009?

Benedict | May 13, 2008 | News | Xbox XBOX 360
A New Xbox already?

Well, it seems that there is a new Xbox on the way called the XBOX 540 which could arrive in 2009. Could this be the move which will get Microsoft in the lead again? Seems good to me and hopefully, you too. 65 nm chips and new Blu ray drives are rumoured to be included. No idea how much it will cost. This Xbox will be awesome!
Taipei (Taiwan) – News about refreshed Xbox 360 consoles are trickling, which is about time given the fact that the console will celebrate its third birthday later this year. The Taiwan Economic News is reporting that first wafers with 65 nm GPUs are leaving the production lines, joining the 65 nm Xenon CPU. Rumors about a Blu-ray Xbox 360 remain alive and we are hearing first information about a possible mid-cycle refresh for the console, which will include the ‘Valhalla’ SoC.

It has been almost a year since Chartered has begun taking the Xbox 360 Xenon CPU from 90 nm to 65 nm and it really was just a matter of time until other hardware would follow. According to the Taiwan Economic News, TSMC has initiated first wafer starts of the 65 nm Xenos GPU and Northbridge. Microsoft apparently has ordered 10,000 300 mm wafers from TSMC at this time.

Quite honestly, we were a bit surprised to hear that Microsoft did not decide to die-shrink both the CPU and GPU at the same time, especially because two different foundries are manufacturing the chips. However, our sources at TSMC explained that Microsoft has the same production philosophy as Nvidia: Wait for a manufacturing process to mature and then run the initial wafer order. Apparently, the transition was simulated in detail by ATI and the tapeout happened without problems, at least according to our sources close to ATI. Keep in mind that ATI is only a contracted partner for Microsoft: Both the CPU and GPU are officially Microsoft parts, and the Ballmer-Gates company is the only one in the console segment following through with such a strategy.

Ahh we don't need another! I'm sure it will be a great, hit system.

I'm incredibly doubtful that we will see a 360 with a built in Blu Ray drive.

So it's basicly a PS3 and what the 360 should have been.

If they do make teh '540' I think they'll be more changes than this.

How reliable is this? If this means improvements on the PS3 plus the good lineup of games for Xbox and shit, I'm sold.

IMO, Xbox 540 sounds a little kid-ish. There's no originality as when the Xbox 360 was announced. I thought the named was slick and edgy but this is just piggybaking an idea and making it crap.

So do you think the 720 is any better?

Agreed, if this is real, the name sucks. Though it sounds like it's sort of a a "new release" of the 360 (sort of like the progression of the GBA -> SP) as opposed to a new console entirely so a name like that would be okay.

Correct me if im wrong, but didn't MS want names for the Xbox to make it seem better than the PS systems?
Like for instance, if the 360 was named xbox 2, and was againts PS3, people might get an impression that the PS3's name was better.

If they stick to this name for their next system, and Sony comes up with Playstation Ultimate or whatever, if they do choose to make a name rather than a number, wouldn't people get the same impression?

I'm sure they'll come up with a decent name, although they could have saved '360' for their third console (just going by that first number of course). I really doubt that they'll hit the next-gen console next year, let alone the year after. Perhaps in 2010 we'll see some first details and such if E3 is still going on, for a release of 2012 or so.

Why am I thinking about these particular dates? Well...Gears of War 3 will be on the 360, why throw edge off that and bring in a new console?

540 sounds stupid. If you divert from the standard sequential number thing like the PlayStation, at least do a Nintendo and make original names every new console.

How is that standard. 'Doing a Nintendo' as your dialog seems to put it is, in fact, more common in consoles.

Ok... that just sounds stupid, surely they can come up with a sexier sounding name then that.

As long as they fix the ventilattion problem, it will be good.

I doubt it would come out 09 though...

Well if a 540 is upon us next year i would be outright shocked. I mean it sounds all good and well but common just a bit early for it isn't it?

Honestly, it isn't so original anymore. 360 sounded cool, but now basically a repeat, just a different number? Lame.

Well I guess the name doesn't matter as long as its a good console.

    360 + 180 = 540

I'm thinking that the last thing MS wants people to think would be that their console is going to "do a 180" to become a "540".

I hope this isn't true. Not only is the name horrible but the 360 is still too new. I mean a modification is fine but not an entirely new console.
