Has the Wii mote actually helped?

theundertakergonzo | 4 days 2 hours ago | News | Wii
The big names Wii games called Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess were reviewed on how useful the Wii mote actually is to use in these games.

Of the games listed Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy were the only two which looked at the Wii mote as a non-positive to the game.
A year and a half after its release, people still can't decide on the Wii's worth. Depending on who you ask it's either a fun alternative to hardcore gaming, an innovative system with a lot of future potential, or a cheap and pointless nonsense box that will bring about the end of gaming as we know it and leave us massively biceped but ultimately very bored. Not quite the clean-cut gaming revolution we were promised a couple of years ago.

But a revolution we were promised. And now that all of Nintendo's main first-party franchises are out on the Wii, we've decided it's time to take stock of just what has actually changed as a result of motion control. Each game is going to get grilled on how improved - or not - it is over its predecessors, and then most importantly, we're going to sum up how big a role the Wii's technology has played in the quality of the final product.

Ready to see how big a deal motion control really is? Then read on.

I'm going to be blunt (and I'll probably get thumbed down for this) but I think the Wiimote is absolutely useless in most games.
I've often found myself using the Gamecube controller in games that offer the option, simply because it's easier to use and I have more fun with it.
Nintendo keep going on about how "revoluationary" the Wii's motion control is, but there aren't many Wii games that involve more than "waggling" the Wiimote in front of the screen and, quite frankly, I don't find much fun in that. (and it can pain the wrist after a while).

I've been saying this for awhile myself. The Wii mote is cool for fit and sports, but for actual games its not.

Useless in Mario kart Wii and SSBB.
    Great in LoZ:TP and MP3C.

Most games on Wii are still designed from a traditional gaming standpoint, adding motion controls as an afterthought. When they are included in a game from the beginning, and the game itself is designed to use them well, there is nothing quite like the experience.

Personally, I really like the last line of the article, and agree with it completly. Motion control doesn't belong in every single Wii game, just like analog control isn't necessary for every game on the planet either. But, when the game suits it, motion controls can add a new level to gameplay not possible with a standard pad.

And Ameer, video games in general are gimmicks. I don't really know what else you expect.

      quote
A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature.
Games do not fit the criteria.

Atleast Nintendo have tried something unique and different. Microsoft and Sony decided to go with pretty similar designs to the controllers on their previous consoles. It's always good to see something new and tbh I think Nintendo pulled it off well, the Wiimote seems good to me. Sure, it may not have done as much as possibly hoped, but it's certainly a good thing.

I don't like playing with the GameCube controller or the Classic controller on the Wii tbh, it just makes it seem like any ordinary console. =\

They did a lot of advertising for Mario Kart Wii with the Wii Wheel, so that probably boosted sales a bit for that game.

Super Mario Galaxy's motion-sensitivity wasn't very good IMO. If I hadn't explored a little bit in Brawl, I wouldn't have even known it had it.

I do think it has helped overall in most games, especially first-person shooters because you actually aim using the Wiimote.

It helps...just because people don't like new challenges presented by new control methods means nothing. The motion control is the main reason a lot of people bought the Wii in the first place

I'm not really impressed by the Wiimote right now, but I am sure I will be in the future.

I will use the Wiimote every so often, but I keep using the Gamecube Controller or Classic Controller more.

I generally use the Wiimote, but when it comes to Brawl the GameCube control is better. The Wiimote was perfect in LOZ: TP if you ask me.

I enjoy usin the Wiimote, however, as Jager said, the GC controller is better in many cases, including Brawl.
