As part of its first-quarter earnings statement, Viacom (parent company of MTV, which owns developer Harmonix) revealed that the popular music game Rock Band has "shipped more than three million bundled units" since launching last November. Furthermore, Harmonix's consistent updates with downloadable tracks have led to over 10 million songs being downloaded to date.

When Harmonix unveiled its sleek in-game music store for Rock Band the company also announced a total of six million downloaded songs – so it would seem the music store's launch has certainly helped accelerate song purchases, with an additional four million songs downloaded since late March.

The game's success has had a very positive effect on Viacom's Media Networks division as well. "Media Networks revenues rose 16% to $2.02 billion, principally driven by strong sales of the music video game Rock Band," Viacom said in a statement. First quarter operating income within Media Networks was up 15% to $694 million, in part thanks to Rock Band as well.

"...our Rock Band video game is continuing its successful tour and is emerging as a valuable long-term franchise. We expect to further that success with the upcoming release of Rock Band on the Wii home video game system and our launch in Europe," commented Philippe Dauman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viacom.
