Nintendo's Problem: Shovelware (wait, what?!)

xsynergyx | May 01, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Wii Company
So what's Nintendo's problem for the Wii? No, it's not the fact that it lacks graphic abilities that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 has and no it's not the hardware space, the online or the name itself, but it's the software library. To compare, the 360 has 24% 'trash' games, according to ratings and for the PS3, 17% of the games are 'trash'. For the Wii, it's 37% of their games. Only 20 are considered 'good' and of those 20(11% of their games), 4 are ports from the PS2/Gamecube!

Well the word for what Nintendo is mucking around in is SHOVELWARE. They simply try and make a buck here and there by throwing out games that have little to no effort put into it like the recent Hannah Montana game. All we can do now, is pray that Nintendo fixes this problem in the future and get some quality games out there on the market and then stare in awe as the Wii makes millions of sales.
Since its release in 2005, there have been some 374 games released for the XBox 360. Of the 374, 86 titles have received a ‘good’ rating(an average ranking of 80% or higher, as per GameRankings). 92 have received ‘poor’ ratings(an average of lower than 60%). That means about 26% of the games for the 360 are ‘good’, and about 24% are considered trash. The PS3 has seen 122 games released, with 40(33%) good games and 20(17%) poor games(ironic considering the most common argument against the PS3 is a lack of good games).

The Wii, released alongside the PS3 in November 2006, has seen a considerable 189 games released. Of these titles, a whoping 69, or 37% are complete trash. On the flipside, there are only 20 good games, making up a minuscule 11% - and of those 20, 4 of them are ports of last generation PS2/Gamecube games! What happened?

Hold one a second, 360 has 24% "trash games", Wii 37% "Trash games" and the PS3 has 17% "trash games" in their libraries?

    Flame war and Fanboys commence.

But God they only just realize this for the Wii, well im not saying they are trash just more like rehash of the same Mario, Zelda and Metroid prime games that makes up for 40% if not more on their library. Its pretty sad, and none of them is anything special imo. Nintendo needs better games, New IP's and such cause right now its sad they need to rehash and milk Mario games. Its like EA continuously making garbage games with no real improvement and trying to make a quick buck without effort.

This is how im looking, but i can see where this will lead....

Tbh. they're the good games. It's the rest that sucks.

Nintendo aren't being "daring" enough. Rather than trying new things, they stick with what they know.
Sure, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid Prime (etc) are good games. But would it really hurt them to try something new too? Why not help out the third-party titles or create a completely new Nintendo series?
And where is the third-party support? Nintendo alone can't keep it's console afloat.

At the moment the Wii has a handful of great games, a bunch of decent ports ... but they're all swimming in the shitfest of "other" games.

I never stated they were crappy games, im just noting that they rather make rehashes of Mario and Metroid and Zelda, than make New IP's. There's only so much you can milk with those games. I love Mario when i was a kid, but they are basically milking those games to a new level then SE with FF7.

I just want some new blood into the Wii system. Right now Brawl and possibly another game is the only thing i want out of the Wii and its sad. They haven't done anything fresh or original in quite awhile.

Don't really mean to shove shit at Nintendo's fanchises but do they really change that much? I think even Yahtzee himself said that Nintendo are the only ones we let them get away with.

It's a shame that there are a large amount of terrible games dumped on the Wii, and masking the poor games with 'innovative controls' doesn't do them any justice.

On the other side of the coin, there are still a good amount of awesome games on the Wii. As long as they are still around, I really don't give two shits about how many bad games are on the Wii, since at the end of the day, I am only going to buy the good games.

This isn't the first console to be used as a dumping ground for shit games. PS2, anyone?

Yeah there were plenty of shit games on the PS2, and they muddied up the "Greatest Hits" series of games with 'em......I mean "50 cent" a "Greatest Hits" game.....WTF?!!!

Its because the Wii is the easiest and cheapest console to develop for. Its common sense.

Why would "Generic Studio 1" develop the new Hannah Montana game for the overly-complex and expensive PS3, when it could easily create it for the cheap and easy Wii? They save money, make MORE profit, all in less time.

They are only "crappy" games to those of us that don't like that particular genre or games based on tween shows, the few people that admire those series go out and buy the games because they like the show. Why shouldn't they be able to buy a game if they like it?

I personally don't like them, but with a great number of successful franchises, Nintendo has no real reason to try new things, other than to further impress us and keep the vets coming back for new stuff...which is what all of us want.

Thats true that there are some pointless games.. I think they're running out of ideas. The other day at the store there was a game for jinga on wii? I mean c'mon. Who would pay 40 bucks for that? 10 maybe..

But there are some really awesome games out like GH3, Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and I've been told brawl is really good.
