Slim PlayStation 3 Due For Autumn?

To furthermore speculation that have been previously mentioned on Gamegrep about the PS3 Slim is that it could actually be arriving for a very early Autumn release date according to Nikko Citigroup. These rumours are claimed in attempt to help Sony turn the Playstation 3 into a current profit as they are losing out at the moment.

According to the rumours the new version could pack a redesigned processor and smaller graphic chips so the console will not be as bulky and in addition to this the console would cost more to the consumer to buy then the current model.
Abacuses at the ready: it seems Sony’s due to break even on the PS3 in August. City analysts at Nikko Citigroup reckon the console giant will soon start turning a profit on its machine, and will release a slimmed down version to further boost demand.

According to the rumourmongers at Stuff, the new version will pack a redesigned processor and smaller graphics chips, so the whole package will be much less bulky.

What’s more, the slimline console will also gobble less power, and be cheaper than the current version.

It’s not the first time a slim PS3 has been touted. T3 recently showed off an artist’s rendering of the new console. But with no new features to speak of, is it enough to push the PlayStation ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and the ever popular Wii? Keep it here, and we’ll keep you up to speed.

    Is it me or does the pic look like a Wii put in together with a PS3 cover?

    I like the bulky one tbh. Looks more sleek.

    I also forgot to mention that from the pic, it looks extremely fragile. Tbh, it doesn't intrigue me one bit.

      To be honest i love the PS3 but i think the question should be, wonder what features will be taken out of the PS3 slim... No B/C, 1 USB port, 20Gb HDD i mean the possibilities are endless, though it could help sales as with all those cuts it should be cheap as *bleep* lol.

    I say it's too soon. It's bad enough Sony already has so many SKUs of the PS3 right now, this would only confuse consumers more.

      Personally I'd prefer it. While there being too many is one of the reasons Im not as eager to buy one, so is the current look/size of the thing. Its a beast.

        Then the next question I think should be asked, is what's being removed for the slim? Because there's a fine line between compacted and gimped.

    If it's going to cheaper maybe I'll wait for this one. As long as it plays blu ray I don't care how big it is, the smaller the better TBH, my shelf is being taken up by video game consoles, I don't have that much room left.

      EVERY PS3 WILL PLAY BLU-RAYs. The games are on Blu-Ray disc.

    Probably works better too.
    I never had problems with the Smaller Slim PS2 version, but the bigger PS2's were always a problem for me.
    And I kinda get the same feeling of the bigger version of the PS3's, but hopefully, I wont have to witness that again.

    Oh for Christ's sake. This will only increase confusion among casual buyers ("Which model of the PS3 are you looking for sir? The 20 gig, the 40 gig, the 60 gig, the 80 gig or the Slim version?"). I'm glad that they'll probably make the thing lighter (the current PS3 could be used as a deadly weapon), but it's irritating that this is the fifth version of the PS3 to be released if it is in fact true. The only way they can get away with this is if this model is a redesigned 80 gig.

      It won't confuse anyone because it won't happen until at least 1-2 years from now and when a design revamp actually does get released the only thing it will do is booster sales.

    Sony isn't that stupid. The PS3 is selling just fine. It's slowly but surely overtaking the competition.

    You don't release a slim version of your console when it's already doing okay. You release the slim version when sales start to plateau and then you make a ton of cash.

        A slim PS3 sounds good, quite a large and heavy console (out of the three, at least). I won't need it, though.

    Yeah, it isn't going to happen this soon. Probably not until the PS4's release is nigh (within a year or something) >_>

    For another, the concept (which does indeed look like a Wii plus the top curved cover of the PS3, tacked together) designers seem to have forgotten the USB jacks >_> Unless they are under the overhang (can't see it), in which case, that isn't a convenient location at all....

    And Sereph, there is only a 40GB and 80GB available now. 60GB is about phased out, and the 20GB has been gone for some time >_>

    BTW: To correct the article submitter, it would be CHEAPER to consumers (states so in the article), not more expensive >_>

    EDIT: In case there is any confusion, when I said 'within a year or somthing', I meant 'within a year of the PS4's release', just to clarify....

    I still think it would be a good thing to do. Heck it may even encourage me to get one. People are like "Oh ps3 yea, I cant be bothered to buy one"

    I'm guessing it'll come out and probably cost more then the normal PS3 yet it'll store less i bet. But i was thinking it's a bit early for it, but who cares.

    wow, another idea to try to make this the saving grace of the PS3. reminds me of the SEGA CD and SEGA 32X for the genesis back in the day, trying to booste sales to compete with nintendo.

    id much rather have that 120gb model ps3 "elite" come out cause i wanna get a ps3 soon and i want that badly!!!

    Excuse me what the hell are you talking about? The PS3 is already turning a profit since the better games came out(from late November-present), and since Sony sold some Shares in order to re-coup the money they were losing from the PS3 early in the life cycle.

    And lets not forget the PS3 seems to be on top so far this year in sales, i say the PS3 is doing great and already turning profit.

    That and the going to cost alot is should be fixed asap.

    Which reminds me, the title should be labled as a rumor. Its not confirmed from Sony mouths, so until then its not going to happen Anytime soon.

    So many different versions of the essentially same console. 20G 40G 60G 80G, not to mention some of these have different features, or are recalled... and OH BOY, now it's slimmer.

    They just need to stop where they are and make one type of console.
