Grand Theft Auto modder may face real cops

xsynergyx | April 20, 2008 | News | PC
In New Zealand, modder Stacy O'Callaghan is "sick of all this rubbish" for Grand Theft Auto on his PC. His game doesn't have the New Zealand cop logo on the cops and cop cars so he decides to mod it. Now he's facing legal trouble for "unauthorised use of a police uniform" under the Police Act. Warning: Explicit language at the source.
Now here's a familiar story, modder cooks up something and gets in legal trouble, although it's usually from the software publisher. In this case, "unauthorised use of a police uniform" is an offense under New Zealand's Police Act. And even though it's unclear whether this really fits the definition of that offense, the cops are looking at their options. A cop spokesman said the police are looking into the matter.

He's screwed, but who cares if he wants to mod his own GTA game, they need to let it go. Though he'll be charged with something of some sort i bet, they'll find a reason.

What is the point of charging someone for that? Its his damn game. He can mod it however he wants to. Leave him be. GOSH !

I actually don't care. But he must have done something else to warrant this fine.

This plainly sucks. Who do the cops think they are? He didn't actually do anything with a uniform, did he?

Honestly, I don't see why he cared about the insignia so much anyways.
