Nintendo goes after card counterfeiters

chautemoc | April 08, 2008 | News | Company Misc
Nintendo apparently isn't too concerned with the pirating of their video games at the moment, instead they're going after those who counterfeit Pokemon trading cards. Evidently there are entire factories dedicated to this stuff. The same has happened with Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in the past as well.
In one case on March 26, law enforcement in New York raided seven stores that were known fronts for faux Pokemon cards, seizing thousands of cards and making several arrests. In another earlier this month a Chinese production facility was raided and nearly 1.2 million Pokecards seized.

Nintendo says that during the past 16 months alone more than 47 million counterfeit pokemon cards have been seized at facilities around the world. One seizure alone in China netted 26 million cards.

"Pokémon wants to send a message to importers and producers that we will not stand for the distribution of fraudulent Pokémon product," says Pokémon spokesperson, J.C. Smith. "Pokémon is committed to ensuring our fans receive the quality product they've come to expect."

Which one of those Pikachu cards is fake? They both look alike, apart from one's slightly darker...

Why is Nintendo going after Pokemon card counterfeits, shouldn't they be worrying about games?

And people still but those things?

People still buy Pokemon cards ? I haven't bought more (or even seen my Pokemon cards for the that matter) since the fourth grade.

And why is Nintendo cracking down on counterfeiters now ? People have seen making fakes since the cards first came out.

Is this new stuff? Pokemon cards have been getting counterfeited for as long as I can remember.

I remember whent he very first series (or edition or whatever they're called) of Pokemon cards came out. This was back when I was small and addicted to Pokemon. There were fake cards all over the place then. I'm not surprised there still are now. I'm just surprised it's taken Nintendo this long to do something.
