Sony not exactly supporting backwards compatible PS3s

chautemoc | April 02, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
Since Sony stopped selling backwards compatible PS3s, they've essentially (and apparently) discontinued support for the systems with it as well. According to a member on NeoGAF who required it, they're pretty much SOL.
When the BC-less 40GB model was announced some of the Gaf community wondered what would happen to their BC models when they broke.

Well the future is now.

1.5 month ago I sent in my 60GB PS3 to repair (Europe), now that I've called with Sony what's taking them so long all I heard on the phone was:
Quote:
"Sorry we don't have any stock of the 60GB left and we don't know when a shipment will arrive to replace your unit. Call back in 2/4 weeks for an update."

By that time my PS3 will be gone 2/2.5 months, with no dates as to when I will have one back home. So fellow BC PS3 owners, pray that your unit won't die, because if it does, you may be console less for a couple of months.

GTA4? Maybe not for me.

That sucks, why don't they make all the consoles backwards compatible? They should be, they'd sell more games.

Can we say calss action lawsuit? For the warranty life of a product, a replacement must be GARRANTEED to have the same features, or the owner must be notified of possible replacement options, either of equal, or greater value.

Didn't we already know that all BC consoles were discontinued? The 60GB's been cancelled since summer, and they've just recently cancelled the 80GB (I think). How is this new?

I think the point of the article is not that the product was discontinued, but rather that Sony is not supporting the 60GB systems. This worries me because I have a 60GB launch system that just started having some problems. I guess I'm glad I've got a 360 so if I have to send it in I can still play GTA IV (though I'm one of those people who'd rather play it on the playstation).

Thats actually a shitty situation. I'd just call them and ask for some ways to work around the problem, such as providing a new PS3 (40gig) while at the same time, transfer all PS2 game saves onto a memory card and all PS3 saves onto the new PS3. Something along those lines. 3 months without my PS3 would drive me insane. Thats 3 months without Rock Band!! Thank god for the 360 sitting 5 inches away from my PS3.

For once, the early adapoters are the ones who truly benefit this time.

This is because Sony wants to sell PS2s as well, I believe. Greedy bastards.
