10 Greatest Consoles

Euphoric | March 28, 2008 | News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
GameDaily has polled the public and come up with a list of the 10 greatest consoles in history. How they found thay many consoles is a whole nother story, but this list is now published and ready to be read and critiqued.
10. Nintendo Gamecube
Despite the fact that it looked like a purple lunch box, it's hard to hate on Nintendo's Wii-predecessor with its fantastic video game lineup. We blasted TIE Fighters in Rogue Squadron II, pummeled friends senseless in Super Smash Bros. Melee and sailed the high seas in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Gamecube also spurred the release of the wireless Wavebird game pad, one of the best controllers in history.

8. Nintendo 64
Why is the N64 our #8 pick? One word: GoldenEye. That classic James Bond game consumed hours of our time, as we and our friends huddled around a TV blasting one another using all rockets or all lasers. Ah yes, and that Super Mario 64 isn't half bad. We also grappled with THQ's wrestling games, blew holes through dinosaurs in Turok 2 and fought the Great Mighty Poo in Conker's Bad Fur Day. N64 was expensive and couldn't match the PSone's cinematic greatness, but it was one hell of a console, with rumble, cool 3-D visuals and a well-designed controller.

6. Sony PlayStation
Sure, some people had to flip the original PlayStation upside down to make it work, but technical difficulties didn't stop us from enjoying a phenomenal lineup that forever changed gaming. Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, Tenchu, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo; clearly one of the greatest legacies in gaming.

The N64 should have scored higher.

That thing had some of the best games I have ever played in my life.

The PS2 should have scored higher... The PS2 was the best console of our generation and that is a solid fact.

Who's generation? Remember that there is a vast age range on this site Nikki. A lot of people would say the SNES was the greatest.

Of the recent generation if i was talking about other generations i would probably be inclined to say the Sega Genesis but that would be biased, i had like 120 Genesis games to 40 SNES games, its obvious which i played more either way to stop confusion i'm talking about the recent generation and not well gamers aged 20 and older.

Indeed. My first system was an Atari. Then I got my NES, my Genesis, and then my SNES, and if I might say so, the SNES was the best of them. But I think the PSX was the best console mainly because it was so revolutionary. It took games to a new level. Introduced 3D graphics, free roam/streaming, great story telling, you name it. There weren't very many games that did what the PSX did up until then.

This is an abysmal list. I'm sorry. Utterly appauling. The fact alone that the NGC got as high as 10th is bewildering. The PS3 isn't even on the list (which I find nigh' on impossible to believe because of what it can do), and the 360 is number 1.

    As smoke said: *facepalm.jpg*

What it can "possibly do". There are literally like 2 games out right now that prove the PS3's processing power, and even then two games do not make the machine the best ever. The 360 has literally dozens of features that were out first that trump all competition and dozens of games that are incredible. The PS3 has nothing to it's name other than promise, and this is not "the most hopeful console" list.

GameCube was one of the most mediocre systems Nintendo has ever come up with. Especially In comparison to the other consoles Nintendo has made. Nintendo didn't even try with that console. Unlike the other Nintendo consoles it did not have an epic Nintendo themed game like the other consoles like a Mario adventure or it's sole Zelda adventure. The Wind Waker was a game they could have put on the GBA probably. GameCube probably does deserve to bo on that list but in comparison to the other 9 consoles it's in the right spot.

Yeah, that list was pretty bad. The top three should of been SNES, PS2, then N64. (with the PS1, NES, Dreamcast after that)

No current gen consoles should be on there.

Gamecube number 10? Don't even Nintendo fans admit that console was a piece of garbage?

360 as number one is pretty funny though.

Resident Evil made by almost crap my pants, and Twilight Princess has the best gameplay I've ever experienced. The Pikmin series was also great, so keep that one in mind.

I personally loved the GameCube if only for the RE games being remade on them, but yeah, other than that, console pretty much was a waste.

But yeah, 360 wtf? I was expecting the PlayStation. I mean how can you not love the PlayStation? The original is just so full of real gems of titles. PlayStation, whether you hate Sony or not, really revolutionized the industry and brought it into the mainstream.

Having any current gen system in a list of the top 10 greatest consoles ever is just really ignorant and short sighted. PS3, Wii, 360, none of them deserve to be on there. Maybe the 360 ends up having a really terrible 2nd half lifespan, maybe the Wii starts getting really amazing games. Maybe the PS3 completely fails and MGS4 sucks, who knows, it's just so stupid to include any of them on this list.

      Fail.

And for all the people who want the ps3 on my list it needs some more great games. And the Wii needs more good games. It has it's epics like Galaxy, Prime 3, and Twilight Princess, and Okami which has recently been ported to it. All games that should go down on any top 100 game list.

    10.Sega Dreamcast
    9.Nintendo Gamecube
    8.Xbox
    7.Sega Genesis
    6.Playstation
    5.N64
    4.NES
    3.Xbox 360
    2.Playstation 2
    1.SNES

This list is just what I thnk.

Horrible list but I guess it all comes down to the author's opinion. I honestly would put PS2 number one on the list. 360 taking the number one spot is a laugh. Especially with its unreliability and massive failure rate.

And yes, feel free to thumb me down as well...

XBOX360 #1 what are they smoking.. its one of the best systems ever but not #1 my opinion PS2#1 and NES#2 wouldn't care that much if it was even the other way around.

I almost pissed my pants laughing seeing the 360 at #1. I didn't know it only takes two years to determine the value of a console these days.
I'll take the PS2 and SNES over it any day. I'd consider the PS1 ahead of the PS2 except that my PS1 actually crapped out on me so I had to use my PS2 to play all those games anyway.

I don't know why people are getting worked up over this. The Gamecube is on the list...that being said we might as well just get our own blogs, come up with our own top 10, publish it, and watch as how everybody starts ripping their own hair off.

Hmmm, that wasn't a good list, in fact, it sucked. I say that the 64 definitely needed to be higher. It had SSB, SM64, Goldeneye, Turok, LoZ:OoT, and many other great games, plus in it's time, it had some amazing graphics.

I honestly don't see why the PS1 made it. I never liked it much, plus most games never got me much.

The XBOX360, I admit, deserved to be up high, but not #1. I think that the 64 and Wii both beat it. The 360 should have been about fourth in my opinion, maybe third. I also say completely take out the DS. Ya, I have one, I play it, it has some good games, but to be up as high as it is, no. It isn't that good. The NES and SNES should have also been higher, both had classic games that started many a franchises, such as Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, and many others.

The N64 had like 3 good games. Even though golden eye brought the first person shooters to the mainstream. It does not even belong on the list. The gamecube was pretty crappy to..

I don't know what to say about this list. They have the DS in front of the original Nintendo and PlayStation. They also have a console thats only been out 2 years and hasn't even built up its library yet, sitting at #1. Greatest console ever? No, you can't say that today.

Yes the 360 is a lovely system that, despite its faults, has a lovely integration system going, but the top console of all time? Seems unlikely...

Also, the DC makes it on the list and the Wii doesn't? The DC was slow, clunky, and had only the VMUs and a poorly chosen dialup modem adapter for technical achievement. Its games were fun, but there was hardly enough to keep it afloat. The Wii made more technical advancement in gaming before it was even released than it did in its lifecycle. :/

I think putting 360 at top before its lifespan is even over is, as was said, terribly short-sighted. It's like saying how great your race victory was when you've still got 5 laps to go. I respect the 360; it's got a helluva lot of great games, and an online service that works very well, but #1? And before it's even finished? I smell a fanboy. And 'best controller ever created"? Wow. I just have no words.

No surprise PS3 isn't on there. It hasn't had enough time to give any definitive impression. I'd like to be hopeful that it'll eventually make someone's top 10, but there is a LOT of hate going around against it.

yes the new gen consoles shouldnt be on the list. 360 is pretty good(only played halo 3 at cousins house, but it was fun)

im really not use to xbox controllers cause im too use to playstation controllers. ps controllers fit the hand to perfection and its simple enough.

I would also like to add that anyone who puts the Dreamcast so high up on a list of the greatest consoles ever is just trying to make a statement. I mean nothing truly revolutionary came out of the dreamcast, it was definitely cool but the games are all an afterthought. How can a console that got discontinued due to not selling well possibly be considered the #2 best console of all time?

It's just stupid. I understand, the dreamcast was an awesome console, there were a couple of games that were definitely fun, but the only reason to put the dreamcast so high up is to, like i said, make a statement and get some "street cred" so to speak.

    My list:

    1. NES
    2. Nintendo 64 (wow, what a fanboy start.)
    3. PS2
    4. XBOX 360
    5. Nintendo Wii
    6. SNES
    7. PS3
    8. SEGA Dreamcast
    9. SEGA Genesis
    10. XBox

Honorary Mention: Atari Jaguar, for most epic fail.

TBH, excluding the NESes and the 64, you can't really have much of a fight with these consoles. They all have their ups and downs, and it depends on what features you go after. So in that case, even my list isn't honestly that good.
