Playstation 3 firmware update 2.20 detailed

The release of the firmware for Blu Ray 2.0 spec (aka BD Live) is on the horizon and it appears a new update is also in the works for the PS3. Version 2.20 will upgrade your PS3 much like the current Blu Ray players, allowing you to do a number of nifty new things with your movies (detailed below) and also some video format and web browser improvements
-- "Resume play" will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc
and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been
removed.(*1)
-- "Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP
to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
-- PS3 system's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly
linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's
view speed will be improved.
-- DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
-- "Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the
control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback.(*2)

This is *bleep*ing worthless! What do I care about internet browser updates when I have a PC?! Where's in-game XMB.

USE SOME DAMN SENSE! DO YOU WANT A GLITCHY AS HELL XMB NOW, OR A FLAWLESS ONE IN TWO MONTHS?

I'm getting SICK of people whining about this. >_>

I'm not here to moan about the XMB. I just don't understand what is so difficult about implementing it. If the 360 has had the equivalent since launch in 2005, why hasn't the PS3 had one sooner? Can you explain to me?

I believe it's because their aspirations are larger. They want complete access to the XMB, not just the blade as in 360.

But honestly I couldn't tell you from a technical standpoint. They should have those japanese dudes that do the updates put out another article like they did back a couple of months after the PS3's release. I loved reading that translated article. We need more technically minded articles. I love to read about all the tech details.

The 360 doesn't have full access to the menu system. It only brings out a blade that lets you access some things. What people are asking for from the PS3 is full XMB access, which uses a TON of space on the RAM, so it's VERY hard to do.

@ Guticb: It has everything you need though. If they made the same stuff for the PS3 I'd be more than happy.

<3 Guticb. Your inability to detect my sarcasm kills me. I thought people would have recognized all I stood for by now but apparently not. heheh. I thought this was particularly obvious.

Sarcasm doesn't work too well online without a "" smily. >_>

I hear that excuse all too often but I've been able to use it extensively on the forums and never have a problem except for the people that just jump the gun and reply before full comprehension. I've been posting around here long enough to where I thought my demeanor was quite easily read.

I thought it was hella obvious since the only reason I did it was because of the first post "and now for the complaints."

Please explain why. That has to be the most pointless feature of them all. When was the last time you paused a film and took out the disc?? Exactly..never. When I watch a film I watch it till the end. I'm not going to remove the disc and watch the rest another time.
The other features are good enough though. Any word on when it's being released??

    Yeah, I've seen worse X.X updates >_>

I wish they'd improve the browser a bit more though...But at least they are improving it somewhat.

Well i guess its a good update and we all know that ingame XMB will be coming with home which will be in the summer.

What i would like to see them do is UPDATE the PS Store so it sells episode from your fav TV show and Blu-Ray Movies which they can do don't understand why they haven't done yet and Music to. Since the XBOX LIVE store sells TV shows why doesn't the PS Store.

They start adding more stuff to the UK PS its lacking so much its like sony doesn't care about the UK. The Japanese and US have so much stuff the Japanese PS store has so meny PS One games it not funny.
O does anyone know when the PS store will start selling PS2 games.

Apart from the last 3 the rest are pretty useless for me. I never watch blu-ray since I dont have a HDTV. But the rest are OK I guess.

Just to weigh in seriously on this, I love that they're updating the web browser. If they could make it seriously stable and awesome then that would be freaking sweet. I mean to browse the web from your big ass 1080p TV would be awesome. A

All they will need then is to get the ability to run regular TV channels through it in HD and record them and then that would just be brilliant.

Eh, I welcome any updates that improve something in any way. It's a minutes time to better the performance of the system.

I always want all of the anticipated features from every update, but it doesn't really affect me if we don't get it.

So there is now Subtitle stream support? That is very nice for me....But I wonder if Multi-audio support is somewhere down the line?

For me, both are important, though subtitles especially

I just hope my PS3 can actually read these files that have soft subs >_>

what is it with people wanting in game xmb, you do not need in game xmb

what you need is 2 little things. Friends and Music sections
and whose to say sony will implement in game music overlap?
tbh, if i had soething where i could see my friends, read messages etc in game, rather than the whole xmb, i would be happy

I believe the two items you mentioned are what would make up an "in-game XMB". It would be similar to the Xbox 360's Guide, which lets you access the essential features of the Dashboard menu. And it would rock.

I wondered what that update did. I went onto my Ps3, and it came up with a new system update is available. I though cool, should be some good new things I can do with my Ps3, but no, a few poxy Blu-Ray updates. I don't even have any Blu-ray discs.
