JP Wii Virtual Console: 03/18/08: It's a Varied Set

Akira_EX | March 18, 2008 | News | Wii
Japan gets a varied set of games for its Virtual Console update Tuesday, with each game representing different genres. For me, anyway, there's not really any game out of these four that I'm looking forward to, although some of these may be interesting.

The first game is Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun for the Famicom, better known outside Japan as Renegade. From what I hear, even though it is a Kunio-kun game, the quality isn't up to par. Its impact is what it spawned: most notably, River City Ransom.

Next up is Super Gussun Oyoyo for the Super Famicom. It is a Lemmings-type game, where you direct characters to a goal with falling blocks. Just see the video for more.

Third up is Bomberman Panic Bomber for the PC Engine. It is a vs.-mode type puzzle game, where the goal is to make the opponent's side fill up with blocks. There are elements signature of the Bomberman series as gameplay elements.

The last game is Mr. HELI no Daibouken (literally, Mr. Heli's Great Adventure), known as Battle Chopper outside of Japan, for the PC Engine. It is a horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up.

Recap:
  • FAM: Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (Renegade), 1-2 Players, 500 Points
  • SFC: Super Gussun Oyoyo, 1-2 Players, 800 Points
  • PCE: Bomberman Panic Bomber, 1-5 Players, 600 Points
  • PCE: Mr. HELI no Daibouken, 1 Player, 600 Points

  • This week's Japanese Virtual Console update features three games that aren't what they seem. Super Gussun Oyoyo totally looks like a platformer in screens, but it's actually a Lemmings/Pac-Man 2 style game in which you direct an uncontrollable character with falling blocks. Similarly, you might make assumptions about the genre of a game called Bomberman: Panic Bomber (possibly that it is in the Bomberman games genre) but it's also a puzzler!

Most deceptive of all is Nekketsu Kunio-kun. It's a Kunio game from Technos, which leads one to assume that it's going to be great. It is not great. It is profoundly not-great.

Only Mr. HELI no Daibouken is what it seems: an adorable cute-em-up starring a lil' helicopter.

  • Nekketsu Kunio-kun (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
  • Super Gussun Oyoyo (Super Famicom, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
  • Bomberman Panic Bomber (PC Engine, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points)
  • Mr. HELI no Daibouken (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
