GeForce 9800GX2 and nForce 790i Ultra SLI Now on Sale

JelalTrueshot | March 18, 2008 | News | PC Gaming Tech/Hardware
The latest graphics card and mainboard from Nvidia have been officially launched today. Aside from being a screaming banshee straight from the pit of Hades in the gaming world, when the two technologies are combined they utilize a feature known as 'hybrid power'. This feature reduces power on the graphics card when not needed.
Touted as the 'Fastest Graphics Card on the Planet', the Nvidia 9800GX2 launched today along with the latest nForce motherboard, the 790i Ultra SLI. As far as pricing goes, the eVGA 9800GX2 is retailing for $599 through their website and the nForce 790i motherboard is priced at $349.

Seems the 9800GT2 isn't performing as well as I thought. Hopefully NVidia will follow suit with some more models with better benchmarks. Not that they're bad, just not that significantly better than the 8 series.

Well the 9800GX2 is built with 2 G92 processors, the same processors found in the 8800GTS 512. Basically they just took SLI out of the equation for those with single PCI-E solutions.

It's truly lame of them to call this a 9800.

Generally series names are used to designate new and completely different hardware. 2 processors on one card has been done before but never advertised as if it might be new and different hardware.

I know it's all about performance but this just goes to further why I don't like Nvidia and how they operate as a company. Bringing back haunting memories of the MX series and just their sneaky ways in general. Like their 3d mark "optimizations" that involve not rendering the entire scene completely.

You can read my review of the 9800GX2 right over here:

In a nutshell, this card is mega-fast, and pretty expensive ($600.) If you have a high-res capable monitor and want the best money can currently get, this is it.

From what I've read though, two 8800GTS in SLI has a slight performance gain so you'd really get more for less if you can run SLI. This is also considering newegg has the 8800GTS 640MB going for a decent price right now.

Pyrazor-=> You are right generally, but not in the details. The 9800gx 2 is basically 2 8800 GTS -512MB-'s put together. Though it is not obvious, a 8800 GTS 640 or 320 MB is not nearly as powerful as a 8800 GTS 512MB. The 512MB version of the 8800 GTS is much newer and is based off of the 8800 GT, while the older GTS are slower 8800 GTX's. Whew.
But you are right to say that buying 2 8800 GTS 512s would be cheaper right now, and give you similar performance.
