50GB Blu-Ray Disc Is Not Enough For MGS4!

ITANI | March 02, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
An exclusive interview with Hideo Koijima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series complains that 50GB is still not enough and have exceeded the capacity which led the team of developers to compress sections of the game to save disc space.

Kojima: I am not satisfied with the quality yet, however...there isn't enough space.

Interviewer: Not enough space..on..Blu-ray..?

Kojima: Yes.(laughs). Not enough space.

WTF? No space on BluRay? Is MGS4 the ultimate and biggest game of all time?

Yeah, so does this mean you can't complete it in 5 hours, like you can the others? Wow, can't wait

Holy Crap. Haha! I suppose this game is much bigger than we thought. And to be fair MGS3 was much longer than 5 hours.

I read something a few days ago about pretty much the same thing. On the US version of the game they had to leave off the Japanese Voice over because it simply would not fit on the disk.

Weird, this article seems to make no mention of the audio being the largest space eater. I've read about 2 other articles I didn't feel were GameGrep worthy that talked about the reason for them not being able to fit absolutely everything on the disc was because BD didn't have enough space to fit both English and Japanese VOs on 1 universal disc.

It makes sense since MGS is known for their long and copious amounts of dialogue. It's not that each version of MGS4 won't be region universal, it's just that if you buy it in the US you're going to get english VOs and if you buy it in Japan you're going to get Japanese VOs. You can still import it from Japan if you must have those Japanese VOs and it'll work on your American PS3.

Indeed so, I was wondering about that, given that many games are stepping into lossless audio encoding, CBR tracks for audio versus the less time consuming VBR. Yeah it sounds amazing at that level but you also eat up your space in a flash.

Given that MGS has tried to be a cinematic title for so long, it's not really suprising to see they hit a wall in the game for this aspect of things.

GG to those in here that were like "OMG T3H GRAPHIX R SO HUGE LOL @ PC AND OTHER CONSOLES" even with normal mapping you wouldn't eat up 50GB of space. FFS try to pretend to be educated people.

Indeed. People don't realize just how efficient visual resources are getting. Sure, they do take up their fair share, but people that think that graphics take up like 90% of the disc space need to go educate themselves.

I doubt the lack of space has anything to do with the length of the game. Over half of the disc will probably be cutscenes.
This is MGS after all. This is going to be a massive, long, drawn out movie like MGS2. It's still going to be great though. Just don't expect it to be massive because it's taking up 50GB.

They did say the game is pretty long though. I think it was Ryan Payton, from another interview.

Woah, guess they are going over the top with this last game, go out with a bang. If one BD wouldn't have been enough, why not make it a two-disc?

Exactly my thought. I would prefer 2 disks rather than one compressed BD but whatever.

It is hard to believe though that 50GB is not enough.

Good question. 50GB imo is huge as it is.

Wow, I understand why this is an PS3 exclusive.
Kojima is really trying to go to the edge of it, or maybe even go over it.

Since the news has been leaning it to be an audio item, the going to the edge comment is more or less him using as close to raw sourcing as possible for his audio files. In general for basic CD quality ripped straight to un-compressed wave files you get your audio at around 60MB per file for a few minutes of sound. This isn't multi-channel, 24bit/96Hz audio using DTS or Dolby Digital spec sourcing. Once you really start mastering toward these higher end levels of audio, your consumption rate jumps. Given how cinematic the game thrives to be, it's not really shocking that if he's not compressing the audio he ran out of space.

It's like including raw DV stock on the disc and being suprised that after 3 tapes you're out of space on your disc.

Yeah, I head a while ago, about not having other country's language tracks....

So long as there are English subtitles on my North American release, I'm happy (Need the subs, my hearing isn't so good)....
