Slumpy monkey | February 19, 2008 | News | Company
Well the HD format war is finaly over.
Toshiba has made the decion to stop all production of HD-DVD drives by the end of next month. This is a huge victory for the Blue-ray format. The CEO of Toshiba who announced it looked quite sad about this.
Toshiba said Tuesday it's getting out of its HD-DVD business, handing a big victory to the Sony-backed Blu-ray format in the format wars over high-def DVDs.

The company said it will stop making HD-DVD machines by the end of next month.

"It was a heartbreaking decision, but we considered the impact of continuing the business on our earnings, the next-generation DVD market and consumers," Toshiba chief executive Atsutoshi Nishida said at a news conference in Tokyo.

He said the turning point was the decision by Warner Bros. Entertainment last month to release films exclusively in the Blu-ray format.

I'm still surprised it happened this fast. Happy, but still surprised. I wonder how long it'll be before DVD begins to be phased out.

It's not "dead" yet, it takes a very long time to phase an entire storage medium out of the market.

However, I'm personally pleased that we're finally on the way to single next-generation format! Blu-Ray always had the upper hand, even moreso with Sony implementing a reader into the PlayStation 3.

HD-DVD might be dead, but the format war isn't, What about DVD, Blu-ray needs to beat that format before i say its over. Still funny pic though. He doesn't look sad in the pic imo, more like trying to hide either laughing or some other thing.

So your saying DVD isn't a format? And your saying its still not a war? Wow, just wow.

If you read my post i acknowledge HD-DVD being dead, and yeah i did accept it. Im not stupid, there is more than one format out there, and when Blu-ray beats DVD, then i will say it won. The battle just begun, that war was just the preliminary, as Existenz said awhile ago.

Here you go Mr.Clueless, wrap your brain around this: The whole topic in discussion refers to the next-generation of optical media discs, hence the "format war" was between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It never had anything to do with standard DVDs. DVDs will play their role until HD is the standard and be phased out naturally. Is there any "TV war" going on? No, because HDTVs are the next step in the technology. Was there any DVD battle when VHS was becoming obsolete? Nope, there was just 1 standard DVD format and it was the obvious next step as a medium for digital entertainment. The "format war" is just a term, nothing more, nothing less. Everyone knows DVD will cease to exist at some point, not just because of the point I just made about advancing tech, but because HD is going to be the new standard very soon. After the "format war" was decided, we found out what medium would be taking its place. If you're not stupid, you got a whole lot of ground to make up and I think 9 1/2 out of 10 people on here would say the same thing.

Why does everyone treat Finalblade with such disrespect? Admitably he may have a wrongheaded view sometimes but as far as I can see his point is valid, the jump from DVD to Blu Ray is a lot smaller than Video to DVD

lol thats NOT the point. I know you know this. Yes, Blu-Ray has to replace DVDs, but that is not the quoted Format War. Dude consistently goes off topic and when someone questions the non-existant correlation, he says 'oh but I was talking about this n that.' It makes negative sense.

What does TV have to do about this? My point is DVD is still a format and Blu-ray will have to compete against that in order to become the winner. We all knew HD-DVD was going to lose, if the BD specs hasn't proved that and how every where but the US, the HD-DVD was getting rapped by blu-ray wasn't an indication then you must really be living in a hole the past year and a half.

If you had read what he actually posted then you would know what TV's had to do with the post. Blu-ray does not have to compete against the DVD, the DVD will get phased out gradually just like the VHS before it. Therefore you're just talking shit and refusing to admit it.
