If only the Western world was more like Japan when it came to gaming news. Rather than attacking games, they embrace it. And how much do they embrace games? Well in a recent interview titled "A day in the Life of Nobuo Uematsu", the famous gaming composer suggested that the current Japanese national anthem should be ditched, and replaced by the Mario theme.
It would certainly be humorous to hear the Mario theme being played at th Beijing Olympics every time Japan wins a gold medal. Imagine the crowd's confused reaction!
(Uematsu also ouldn't mind seeing the Final Fantasy "vistory theme" playing every time a Japanese athlete wins a medal).
And with the national anthem's lyrics containing the controversial words: "May the Emperor's reign last forever" (which no longer applies to Japan, as the emperor is now just a figurehead), many Japanese people agree that the anthem needs a change. Though don't count on it being changed to the Mario theme ... unless Uematsu gets a say it in!
NU: I think that the Super Mario song should be the national anthem for Japan. [Hums the death refrain] So when someone wins a gold medal at the Olympics, a Japanese athlete, the flag should go up with the theme song. Shoop!
1UP: Japan would become a lot more popular.
NU: Yeah, yeah. The world would have a different image of Japan if we use that.
1UP: I'm sure Kondo-san would really like to hear that quote.
KY: That's a good idea. [Laughs]
Ryan: But before he wins the gold medal, after every victory along the way they could play...
[Kyoko sings the battle victory fanfare from Final Fantasy, then laughs]
1UP: What's the event where they're hurdling? The race where they have to jump over the hurdles? That'd be funny if every time a Japanese runner goes over the hurdles it makes the Mario boing sound.
[All laugh]
KY: You know what? Next Olympics, you should tape it and edit and put it on YouTube. [Laughs] Everyone would just go after the coins then.
1UP: What if all of Japanese life was accompanied by Super Mario sounds? Like when you jump on the mushrooms or something? That'd be great. I'd move here in a second.
KY: You should do it on 1UP for the next Olympics.
1UP: Just redub the entire Olympics with cool sounds...all the Olympic Japanese gold medal winners should be required to jump on a flagpole and ride it down.
RU: But if they fall... [Laughs]

And I would fall out of my chair laughing if I hear that Final Fantasy Victory theme comes in when someone runs in first or something. Hahaha!
