Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Still Possible

jmac353 | February 06, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
The rumor of a remake of Final Fantasy 7 has been running wild ever since the release of Square Enix's tech-demo a few years ago and this rumor has been put down and recovered numerous times over the past years.

This time however, we get probably the most definitive answer yet, until the game is either officially announced or officially canned.

This makes the most sense, the possibility of a FF7 remake is completely dependent on Square-Enix's schedule. Mostly the completion of FF13 and FFv13. There's no doubt a huge demand for this game and I'm sure SE realizes this, and I'm also sure they would have no qualms remaking it, it all just comes down to time.
This month's edition of Official Playstation Magazine has a small follow-up to the interview they had last issue with the director of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core; Hajime Tabata. Quite a lot of the questions actually revolved around the Final Fantasy VII franchise though, rather than Crisis Core itself.

It is worth noting that when asked again about the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake, he said:

"The possiblity for a remake may become greater if, for instance, the schedules of the original members of the Final Fantasy VII development team, such as Kitase and Nomura, open up"

So development of a Final Fantasy VII remake could possibly start after the completion of Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII?

I never really have high hopes for remakes. Usually they end up being the same thing w/ slight enhancement or just go down the drain.

Go play Metal Gear for PS1, then play Twin Snakes for gamrcube, then tell me that again.

WTF do you want? A FFVII FPS of course it's the same thing with enhancements. A remake isn't intended to make people who have played the game feel like it's a different experience. It's about letting people who didn't get a chance to play the original experience the game. While adding enough fresh content to JUSTIFY buying it again.

It would be cool if they remade it. I never played FF7 but I've heard a lot of people regard it as one of the best ones. I could get it I suppose but it being for the PS1 only puts me off. They'd probably make a fairly decent sale off remaking it so there's a reason to remake it.

FFVII was one of the best games for its time. I actually found my old PSone copy of it a few months back, put it in the PS3 and got halfway through the second disc. The replay value is great. The part where Aeris gets the sword through her, man that still pissed me off, lol. I would love to see a remake but only if they were gonna do it graphically.

Correction the best of its time present and future

Regardless this isn't a confirmation we knew this while ago, its nothing new imac. Its obvious that if they have time after finishing the current titles this could possibly happen.

I hope so. Although I hope they only enhance the graphics. I still want the world map and camera angles and stuff.

How about the option for both? The visuals of modern day PS3 graphics are good enough so that they wouldn't need prerendered backgrounds anymore, and could use realtime 3d backgrounds but with fixed camera angles BUT also allow you to switch to a fully 3d player controller camera at say, hitting the R3 button. Best of both worlds.

I'd get this, I never finished VII, on account of it's crap graphics turning me off (I got it a long time after it came out)....

Plus they'd add extra features and stuff, I'm sure >_>

Keep the gameplay the same, and I'll get it...

Thats pretty damn shallow, sure the graphics arent very good, but thats not a reason to turn the game down entierly. You really missed out on one great rpg.

Guess what, it WASN'T that great...Not to me >_>

Hmmmm, which game would you pick...

Game A - Crap graphics, decent story (no, I'm not one of those people who says "FFVII = Sent from Above")

Game B - Much better graphics, and the same basic concept (RPG)...

If a game's story is only decent, I'll sure as hell take the games that have better graphics AND decent stories...

If I had said "FFVII is teh suXXors!11!!11!" or something similarly stupid, that is one thing, but I simply said the graphics turned me off....

You don't know me, or my tastes. Graphics aren't everything to me, but the story and game wasn't that great IMO...It was alright, but I had other, newer games, that I liked more...I had played through probably more than half the story (was partway through the second disk) before I got tired of it...

And guess what? MY FAVOURITE GAME OF ALL TIME has PS1 era graphics >_> That game is Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and I still play it (now on the PSP)...The software studio isn't known for their fancy graphics, but addictive gameplay...I still play the PSP version, and their next game (on the PS3) looks very much the same as the PS2 version...

Next time don't assume that I don't like the game simply because the graphics were bad, PERHAPS I simply genuinely didn't care that much about it to begin with....

You said you didn't finish it because the graphics turned you off. Then you said the game wasn't that great. Yet, if they remake it with better graphics and the same gameplay, you would buy it..Why?

Contradiction much. Sorry tallteen but you obviously need to check what you write cause you sure as hell contradicted your self.
Besides FF7 probably has the best indepth-storyline out of all FF games to date. graphics isn't everything buddy especially since this game was out on the FF7 and it had the best graphics of its time, FF8 actually surpass it.

I hope they do not re-do it, though it will be an incredible epic to wait for I just believe there is no need for it and they should focus on another title.

Why do you not want this re-made? Sure its an epic game i agree, but you have to remember new fans, whether older or new to gaming who never experience the original Cause of its graphics (like Tallteen ) hasn't experienced the game cause of how graphically superior games are today. To remake what is quite possibly the Best FF game of all time, imo, will not only the older fans enjoy it cause the beefed of version, but it will bring in millions of more Fans to the game in hopes to increase the fanbase.

Obviously the people who has played it, doesn't want it to change in the storyline, but i would love to play this game again(over hundreds of times) in modern day graphics. It just increases my love for the game. I still think this is the best RPG game of all time as well but thats my opinion.

I understand that some people may not have played it because of the graphical quality but in then end for me that is the best way to play it. The remake of MGS for Gamecube for me failed just because they made it into a 3D motion and I believe this would just be the same. Also I think they should just leave FFVII alone for a while, fair enough it has the biggest interest out of all games but all the spins offs from it has been poor and im sure anything more to the story will carry on to be like that, and also its just a cheep scheme to get some funds in ¬¬

It's obvious that they'll re-do it. I mean, come on, put yourself in their shoes. Their most sold, most praised game...fans want it, it'll do wonders for the PS3 sales, and they are remaking just about all the other FF's anyways. Didn't they get up to FFVI? FFVII remake will come.

I believe they will get to a remake of Final Fantasy vII after they complete the current set of games they are working on. This gives some hope for future remakes of FF8 and FF9 as well (which I would be looking forward to much more)

Square-Enix is dumb if they put their foot down and say no. The potential profit margin for a remake is massive. As Storm mentioned, it's their money child. It's bad for any business to deny their customers. I'm sure Square-Enix realizes this and they're just trying to lead fans on and build up the hype of a possible remake only to confirm it after Final Fantasy XIII has been out for a while to give themselves a chance to cash in on that game.

I sincerely hope they do make it, JUST because they have gotten a little too used to popping up every few months to say that its a possibility. Just make the game already. If they do come out and say a remake it not happening, then all this teasing will immensely piss people off. I hope they have been working on it all along and just haven't revealed any info/pictures. Damn every time I hear about this 'possible remake,' I think of that tech demo and then I think of Knights of the Round in 1080p. (mod edit: DONT BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER) that, man they have to do a re-make.

I don't think there will be anything except a new game to finish off the FFVII story. That is all they need really. I doubt even SE would drag it out for much longer.

It'd be a pretty stupid idea if Squeenix didn't remake FFVII now. They have been stringing along the fans ever since the tech-demo was released (in 2005, I think?) and with all these "hints" that they're going to remake it, it'd be pretty cruel for them to suddenly say that they have no plans for it and that they were never going to remake it.

They've basically dug themselves into a hole with all this hinting and "maybe, maybe nots". They keep building up the hype with these possibilities, now they've gotta do it.

I agree. There's no point for them to be leading us on for nearly three years if it's not going to happen. They keep saying it's possible, so it's past time that they followed through and make it happen. Who knows, maybe they'll even add in some of the things that were left unfinished in the original product because the dev team got rushed if/when they come to their senses and actually do it.

But you have to remember something, just cause they say maybe, maybe not stuff, and possibilities doesn't mean its official. This just re-states that if they have time. They may say now it could happen and when the time is right, but we or they don't know what other games they will be making after FF13 and Versus.

Im a big supporter for the remake you know that, but then nothing is absolute, just like this. I agree with what you said, that they should remake it, but we are just the minority of it all.

While I do see where you're coming from, you have to see that while nothing is absolute, it's doubtful that Square would keep saying it's a possibility all this time and never actually say it's never going to be in the works if they're not going to do it. Even though there's no hard evidence in the form of an official confirmation just yet, that alone is enough to make an educated assumption that it will be done at some point.
