XBOX360 Sales vs PS3 Sales... And It Seems PS3 Did Better In 2007...

Now before I begin, I'll let you all know that all the numbers contained within this article are from OFFICIAL sources, namely Microsoft and Sony themselves. So with the numbers and links courtesy of GameBlews.... here goes nothing:

In Jan 07, Microsoft said they sold 10.4m XBOX360 Consoles (skip to the 6:30 mark)
In Jan 08, Microsoft said they sold 17.7m XBOX360 Consoles (Confirmed by Major Nelson)

This gives a year on year sales figure for XBOX360 of 7.3m Consoles sold in 2007.

Now lets take a look at Sony. This time only the one source:

Accoding to a press release, Sony sold 1.66m PS3 consoles in 2006, and a FURTHER 8.83m PS3 consoles in 2007. Clearly that means that the Playstation 3 has out-sold the XBOX360 in the first FULL year that they have been competing side-by-side.

Those are really interesting figures. Whilst we don't look at Wii, as we're sure they've outsold both by miles, looking at the two, could EA's predictions be coming into fruitition?

However let me give you another QUICK outlook on the figures, which wasn't mentioned in the article. The end of 2006 was the end of the 5th quarter in which Microsoft did business, and they sold 10.4m consoles as shown above. So if we take a look at Sony's position 5 quarters later 10.49m consoles sold. It really is neck on neck, with PS3 having sold around 0.04m more consoles (minimum) than their counter parts.... Seems to be good news for Sony...

The numbers don't lie, but I'm sure this is due to the fact that most gamers looking to buy a 360 either got one before '07 (like I did) or just have yet to get around to it until maybe...now.

I have to say, though, that I'm impressed with Sony's numbers. I didn't expect them to shoot up that much within a year.

There are plenty of gamers out there, especially clear when the PS2 sells 100 million consoles and the Wii is just selling like crazy. So for a console like the XBOX360 that's cheaper with a larger games library to not sell as well as the PlayStation 3 is a pretty big deal. There are clearly still plenty of gamers out there that haven't adopted a next gen console yet and it's also clear that price doesn't have as HUGE a factor as people thought in that decision.

Now if you consider that Sony did this in a year where exclusives still aren't that great. Then you think about all the great exclusives that are to be coming out this year for the PS3 (or at least slated to come out). Then the idea that the PS3 takes 2008 looks very real.

True, but we have to take in account that the 360 isn't loved by one of the biggest countries contributing in the gaming industry, Japan. The Japanese really only go by Sony or Nintendo, only two consoles for them to worry about, and the Wii's cheap already so most gamers there are sure to get a PS3 as well.

I'm a bit confused, though. Going by the numbers, 7.3 million 360's sold in 2007...and going from 1.66 million to 8.83 million, the difference is roughly 7.2 million...so then how they did outsell?

If you click on the link I provided you will see that they sold around 1.66m PS3's in 2006, and on top of that they sold ANOTHER 8.83m consoles to bring the GRAND TOTAL to 10.44m consoles, which is the number I mentioned at the end of the article

So let me get this straight. More PS3s were sold last year then the 360s??
    Wow, there's a pleasant surprise.
    Go Sony.

5 Quarters on, and PS3 have a slight lead over the number of XBOX360's sold during the same time frame (5 Quarters). Note that during those 5 quarters that Microsoft did business, only 4 of them was unchallenged in the US & Japan, and all five were unchallenged in the UK.

    Sounds about right.

Most people think the 360 sold more just because it was released before. Which is unfair.

I am just amazed the Playstation 3 hardware sales are so high for 2007 as I though they were crap. This was one hell of a pleasant read to go against that xD

They were incredibly poor sales in my eyes. I mean honestly, they were averaging 1.4m for the first four quarters. That's really poor. However the last quarter was when the 40GB version came out and the price dropped, and they honestly launched themselves into the lead.

It could be that they sold, just because it was christmas and there was a price drop. Without those conditions, we are yet to see how well Sony does at the end of this fiscal year.

Krunal is that 10.44m sold Worldwide or shipped. Cause every time i think its sold its shipped, Just need clarification.
Still the numbers are staggering in 07 compared to 06. Although there was only 2 months of 06 from when it came out, so that isn't a fair comparison of sales in my opinion. Still the numbers don't lie, i can only imagine the sales the PS3 will have in 08 compared to 07. It must be doubled, since the PS3 sold in 07 to 06 by 7 to 1.

That's shipped consoles. It's a bit too hard to calculate the exact numbers sold, so most people go buy how many they shipped.

If you remember, Sony did recently say that they had reduced their estimate of 11m consoles SOLD by end of March to 9m.

But how would they know they won't meet the demand yet. for all they know DMC4 could help sell a million consoles for PS3 for one month making it close to 11 million. I just think they're giving up too early, anything is possible.

          Krunal | February 10, 2008
Because of the 10 million+ shipped they must know that a couple million of them are still in the shops. We don't know what will happen, but I think they were expecting games such as MGS4 and GTA4 to help sell the console, and with them delayed, chances are they'll get higher selling rates next fiscal year.

Yeah but the sales have sky-rocketed in January that could have helped it alot, still i think they're giving up to early. Im optimistic and i can see them hitting it or very close to it.

But i also get what you mean though.

The point is, the PS3 sold more in a year than the 360 did. Worldwide in total, it's still behind, but it's expected.
And it's making up in the games division, though frankly I doubt we'll ever see anything more popular than Halo 3 and Bioshock on PS3...we'll see.

      Existenz | February 06, 2008
The Metal Gear franchise is more popular than both those games, so if Gran Turismo and Killzone 2 will probably sell quite a few units and shift a few consoles, the fact is 2008 the PS3 has like 40 exclsuive games all of which can shift consoles, if all of them only shift like 3 million consoles between them the PS3 will be head and shoulders above evry console this generation... I mean i think MGS2 sold like 14 million units and it was pretty much a launch title, so that shows that games shifting power.

I honestly don't see Bioshock as being as great a hit as you make it out to be. Sure it was a "hit" but it wasn't soo great that no other game can match it. Hell, GTA4 will most likely beat it, just because it's GTA. Yes not an exclusive, but still.

Then don't forget FFXIII, MGS4, Killzone 2 and many others. Your giving too much credit to Bioshock.

I'm glad you three don't think so, but a hell of a lot of reviewers found the game amazing- as well as the numerous outlets that named it game of the year.

        Except Sony Defense Force.

Ever heard of Biased reviewers, well thats who they were. They are 360 fanboys, and will rate any 360 game in the 9 and 10s than what they deserve.

          The game was nothing special.

Wasn't Sony Defence Force run by a Wii (or was it XBOX360) loving website? As proved by the fact that when they looked it up, both were registered to the same person?

You are a *bleep*ing idiot finalblade. Nothing special? So many morons on this website.

That crack about SDF was a joke, Krunal. It's probably a fake website, but it was the ONLY one to give a negative review. It's just too bad these hundreds of 'biased' reviewers aren't as objective as you guys. What a shame.

Hey there LordMaChao, still with the name calling, tsk tsk tsk, grow up and stop with the name calling.

It wasn't special and Tek agrees, it didn't wow us. Except it ok. And there is biased reviewers out there, you can't possibly think otherwise.

          Talk to you later man.

@ MaCha0: You know, I'm pretty sure you were the one who told me not to take reviews seriously, and yet here you are putting so much importance on them.

Let me tell you something. Halo 3 was rated 9.5 almost everywhere, yet when I played it, I failed to see the huge draw people saw in it. Reviews mean little.

Gears of War 2 may spur some sales but I don't think this year is going to be kind to the 360. I 'm not really surprised by this really. I mean people kept saying the PS3 had no exclusives and that the PS3 wasn't doing as well as Sony had planned but the reality is it did quite well for itself considering all the opposition

People just saw less games and deemed it as failure, when in reality it was selling more on average than its main competition.

Agreed, it was the view that "it doesn't have enough games" that made people think that it was a failure, however if you look at it, I believe it has more TYPES of games than the XBOX360, yes not as many games, but more unique types of games.
