Another PlayStation 3 price cut spews from the rumour mill

mistermostyn | January 21, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
With PS3 manufacturing cost having dropped by almost half during 2007, the PlayStation 3 has already enjoyed a couple of retail-friendly price cuts to help it compete with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Another rumoured price cut is now doing the rounds on the Internet, suggesting the 40GB model is next for the cull... (Image credit: Nigt)
In light of PS3 per-unit manufacturing costs presently sitting at around $400 USD (having dropped from $800 USD), a number of posters at SlickDeals.net are this week suggesting that Sony is preparing to shift the 40GB SKU to $299 USD this coming January 28.

While pinches of salt should remain firmly grasped at this juncture, SlickDeals does have a history of predicting upcoming price reductions in the videogame industry. While primarily a wide-ranging electronics site, SlickDeals successfully broke the news of both prior PS3 price reductions, and also last year’s initial Xbox 360 price drop.

I would love another price cut XD I plan on getting one later this year anyways. Spending less money will be good. Means more money for games.

It's just a rumor, but a sweet rumor if it actually were true, I have yet to get a PS3 and I am very much looking forward to getting one, especially with the games that are slated for release.

More gamers, at least in America, will be able to buy it, times have become hard thanks to the economic recession, and if more gamers can buy the PS3 or any other system, the better. Living on college expenses, every penny helps, so I will keep my fingers crosed

They might need it. Half of the target consumers still thinks it costs $500 and the only game out is Resistance. Either a price drop or an even larger marketing campaign would be needed to get people to realize it's a great game system at an incredible-ass-deal

I doubt this, just when they broke even, I doubt they wanna start losing money again.
