Puppy attacked and choked after chewing videogame cables

mistermostyn | January 15, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
Videogames are again cited following a cruel attack on an 8-week-old beagle puppy - which came about from the attacker experiencing extreme stress after losing his job. The puppy eventually died from sustained injuries.
An article posted this week by the Associated Press outlines how a Bucks County man in Pennsylvania choked an 8-week-old beagle puppy after he found it chewing on cables connected to his videogame console.

Jonathon Allison of Bristol showed considerable remorse after pleading guilty to the charge of cruelty-to-animals, offering that he had loved his young dog and wished now that he could take his actions back.

Poor dog...I understand that the guy was depressed, though, and didn't mean for that to happen. Hell he pleaded guilty and almost committed suicide.

It won't bring the dog back but it's pretty clear that the man is hurting from what he did. I suppose to get back the wires, you'd have to call up the company?

Yeah it is, "cables connected to his videogame console."

Anyways, the guy should get life in jail for taking another's life away.

I think that anyone found guilty of animal cruelty should have the same done to them.

They would've given me 25 to life if I would've had my chance to break his *bleep*ing face, I take animal cruelty extremely seriously.

    I'd never do that. Ever.

I know he lost his job, but it's still wrong, and so deserves a just punishment.

Video games shouldn't be blamed for this though, he said he was suffering stress.

Dirty bastard. If he truly loved his dog he wouldn't have done it in the first place. Any halfwit knows that puppies chew on anything they can find - He should have got the cords out of the dog's way. Every dog owner knows that.

I don't think "depression" or "stress" is reason enough to kill an animal either. If he had killed a person as a result of his "stress" he would end up in jail. His condition doesn't make killing a dog justifiable either.

That puppy was trying to do that dumbass a favor, and that prick has the nerve to choke it !?!?!?

Hey, maybe if you lose your job, you should have been out looking for a new one instead of playing video games, you dumb *bleep*. Your dog was trying to help you.

Yeah, because everyone knows chewing on cables is helpful.

Still doesn't give him any right to choke the pup, though.

That's not how I see it. He was terminated from work, a good stress-reliever would be video games...then again it could also be playing with your pet.

He wants to pay for his crime, though, he even attempted suicide because of what he did.

What a disgraceful man. So what if you lose your job, you go out there and you find another one, that's not a good reason to choke your pet. A sick man, really. Nothing can justify killing another human being or "man's best friend".

Wow...ok, I understand people are highly against animal cruelty, I am too (there's a very disturbing video I saw on Youtube late last year, on how people beat cats and dogs, contain them, and use their fur for clothing...on a daily basis...that really upset me), and it's hard to believe that someone could be that depressed over losing a job, but you can't just deny the guy's thoughts through this entire conflict...he was pretty damn depressed, and until you put yourself in his state, you can't simply call him sick for his actions.

As I said in parenthesis, there are those that do this as their job practically...those are the real sickos. Those are the people that you should truly be mad at, who are of sound mind and well aware of what they are doing.

    quote
Jonathon Allison of Bristol showed considerable remorse after pleading guilty to the charge of cruelty-to-animals, offering that he had loved his young dog and wished now that he could take his actions back.

In his defence, Allison also described how he was suffering through stress after injuring his back and subsequently losing his job. The report also states that Allison had attempted to take his own life and was now on medication.

If he didn't love his dog...after that action, why did he attempt suicide? I would have wanted his punishment to be worse than what he recieved, and it looks like he would have accepted any punishment handed to him, but he was ruled for 100 hours community service and therapy.

The dog survived the attack, but when it's breathing began to lower from the damage he sustained, the Vet put him to sleep. That wasn't made clear enough in the description.

Attack this comment all you like...I'm just dumbfounded at how many want to kill this man when there are those that do this for the hell of it...

For starters, the reason people want to kill this prick was because of the fact that he attacked his dog uneccessarily. I don't care whether he lost his job or his girlfriend, NOBODY CARES NOW. And he regrets it....so???? I'm sure there are fathers who beat the shit out of their children only to regret it, but it's a bit too *bleep*ing late, don't you think? The damage has been done, he pays the consequences.

On that note, I'd fscking hunt down anybody else that abuse their animals if I had the power, it's not just some guy.

Now if you guys find it ironic that sometimes people care more about the animal than the person themselves, well let's just say that animals usually deserve more sympathy.

See, that's the problem right there, you don't care about his problems. There's a reason why investigations go on, to see why someone would do this, while apparently people only focus on that he did it.

He is DIFFERENT from those that do it purposely, people that do this and have no problems in their lives, but make money for their fur coats to go into fashion, and yet what I'm getting is that he's being put down as bad as them...because they are so angered that they lost their sense of logic into asking why?

I understand your position very well, but you need to really understand his. And that is easier said than done, but we should at least try to get his position. Him regretting this does not forgive him for his sin, neither does attempting suicide, won't bring the puppy back, but come on, he's feeling like shit right now, condition so worse that he's been ordered for therapy...

I don't find it ironic at all, Seeker X. I agree that animals deserve more sympathy, they deserve to be treated better.

I agree with Seeker X. The dog is dead because of him (regardless of whether he killed it straight away, or if he caused breathing problems for it thus resulting in it being put down).

Just because he is depressed and feels bad about it NOW, that's not enough to make people feel sympathetic towards him. He still killed his pet dog. Strangling an animal is never justified ... ever. And to say that he loves his dog is almost laughable. Boo-hoo if he atempted suicide after realizing he loved his dog. If he loved his dog as much as he claims, then he wouldn't have choked it. Simple as that.

If he had killed a person, this would be a totally different story. People would be wanting him to be jailed for life.

          - -

p.s. (to Storm's post below) I've taken psychology courses for the last 4 years, Storm. I spent half a year studying mental disorders specifically. And I still don't consider that a reason for me to feel remotely sorry for him, or to think that he should be any lessly punished. I don't think it's heartless to say that he doesn't love his dog. Many pet owners love their dogs (I love my dog) and would never hurt them - Many mentally disturbed owners love their dogs and would never hurt them. I do not like the idea of him claiming to love his dog as much as any other dog-owner loves their dog. Why? Because he is the reason his dog is dead. End of.
The saying "you don't know what you have until you no longer have it" doesn't usually apply to people who actually kill the thing they miss.

Pretty hard to feel sorry for the guy anyways. Then again, we're not saying he deserves to be below people who do it for a living, the reason we're fired up over this is because it was brought to our attention and because he is STILL guilty anyways though you can bet your ass we'd be a lot more pissed off with people who even skin the animals for clothing, but alas we don't have the power to stop anything, only criticize and be heard and we're exercising that very right in here.

GG, this has happened before. People who loved others have killed them in depressed states. I have a godsister who's husband strangled her, and it was out of depression. She's fine now, but that still traumatized her. And yes, he really does love her...that may sound absurd to you but...when our minds become deeply troubled...things can get ugly.

Hurting, killing loved ones, be it human or animal, can come from depression, anger, and other highly emotional issues. It's a bit heartless to say that he didn't love his dog, when you don't even know the guy. Again, he's feeling terrible about this...I suggest Psychology courses. That also helped me to understand the troubled-minded, and what we can do when we aren't 'normal,' what we are capable of, even if we truly love someone.

You're still bringing him down to those sickos level. Yes what he did was wrong, but the difference between him and the sickos is that he DOES feel guilty...he knows it, that's why he needs therapy. Don't you see? He's miserable...he almost killed himself ffs..."you don't know what you have until you no longer have it," ever hear that one? I think the same can be applied here. Detectives dedicate their lives to questions such as, "Why?" and "What?" Why did he do this? What could have caused him to do this? I'm not saying become a detective, but break down why he did this, and not just focus on the conclusion...on the action. Ok, he did this, that's where you end at? No reasons why?

It's fine to speak up about animal cruelty and all, but take it to the Neoseeker forums perhaps? Intellectual Exchanges? This has gotten beyond GameGrep, and your voices can be better heard there.

Not that I'm defending this guy from what he did, or for animal cruelty in general. But I don't understand why people are so shocked at this?

Suicide is the what people do when things get really bad. His life is obviously taken an extreme turn. So much so that he would eventually try to kill himself. Basically, when your depressed anything and everything gets blown out of proportion. He's probably low on money and looking forward to gaming, probably his only escape from reality, and he can't because of his dog. Anyone would be angry. Naturally he wanted to punish the dog. He went way too far, granted, but it's understandable. Even still it's been taken care of. He's being punished. Under other circumstances I'd be as angry as some of you are now. This just seems like he was unstable and we're lucky he didn't climb a clock tower or go masacre he workmates. Feel bad for the dog though.

Poor dog, all the puppy did is what any puppy does when it's just that, a puppy, so because of that it ends up dead from a guy who is understandably depressed due to the state of his life. Honestly, I don't really feel terribly sorry for the man, I do a little, but I do feel a lot more sorry for the puppy. I've been in his shoes before (to some degree), I've seen two other people in my life in his shoes before as well, and they NEVER did something like that. Even if you lose two legs, get shot in the gut 4 times, have AIDS, and have a bad back and finally lost your job and are completely alone in your life, you NEVER EVER have a right to take out your frustration on any living being, ever.

@ Storm: I think everyone understands where your coming from, but you can't hide behind a bad back and a lost job causing depression. There are many people out there with problems, some much much worse than the problems he had but they have no right to harm anything either. People can argue that depression leads to this and that, and I'm not saying that it can't be a factor in that, but even still, never ever are you allowed to harm a living thing just because your life sucks and you don't feel good. I can't speak for those who have commented here but at the very least, this is why I can't pity the man that much, and I'd be guessing that something along those lines is stopping others from feeling that sorry for him at all too.

      Storm | January 16, 2008
Fair enough, but then we'd have to look into his life deeper to understand...such as just how bad was his back, or how important was that job to him? How long was he working there? We don't have many details on this, and it's not helping the situation as to why people here don't bother asking why.

I know, it's wrong to harm others just because you're in a bad position/mood, as these are the same people that can help bring you out of your current stage...but there are those out there would take things so far nonetheless...we know this from history, it's happened in the past. The human mind is an extraordinary thing, can lead to excelling in education to the highest degree, but it can also lead to your downfall if you dwell too much on bad times, depression, like the state this man is in.

If one of my dogs did that (although they're both large dogs so they'd never do that) I'd probably hit it but not so much that it broke a bone or damaged an organ just so it'd learn its lesson and not do it again, any lethal strike or action is just way too far.
