God of War creator echoes EA in calling for unified console future

mistermostyn | January 11, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
For David Jaffe, creator of God of War, rival hardware consoles are hurting the game industry and game consumers. His solution? A single, unified hardware platform bringing the best opportunities to developers and gamers alike.
“Can anyone explain to me how having ONE console would be bad for gamers? Or game developers for that matter?” asks Jaffe. “One game publisher would be bad. One giant game developer would be bad. I get how those things would hurt gamers. But why would one unified hardware platform?”

I have to say, I highly disagree with the man for once.

How would one console hurt? Because the manufacturer of it would have ZERO competiion, and could deliver the crappiest console ever, and nobody would have any choice between it and something else. You would be stuck with the crappy console. The manufacturer wouldn't have to make it any better, because either way, they have no competition.

Agreed. Monopolies are almost always bad news for everyone involved. I wonder how Mr. Jaffe would feel if the one company that had a video game console acted like Nintendo in the 16 bit era and required heavy censorship in games published for the system. I imagine God of War would lose some of its effect without the blood.

Why does it sound like he's just whining about having to do more work?

“One game publisher would be bad. One giant game developer would be bad. I get how those things would hurt gamers. But why would one unified hardware platform?”

It's the same answer to those questions. People like choice. And with the competition comes competitive pricing, as well as competitive game development. Sorry Jaffe, stick to making the games, let the big 3 continue making platforms, and just let the gamers game on.

I'd like one console that had the best of all current consoles. But I don't think it'll ever come out right with humans the way they are. The companies would simply deliver crap that costs more than the PS3. It isn't worth it.

This is pretty stupid. Having competition breeds a healthy environment for innovation and creativity. If one console were to have a monopoly then that innovation is restrained to just one potentially limited piece of hardware. Having the freedom for manufacturers to cater for different markets and different styles is a much better system.

With no competition, imagine the prices...They can raise games up to $100 if they wish, and we'll be forced to buy at whatever prices they give...meh, either that or all the gamers will become PC gamers...which'll probably lead to even more people on WoW...and be the end of the world as we know it.

Good for a concept, bad for an idea.

Boycotts can work wonders, especially in situations of luxury. If a lone console maker increases the prices or makes a shoddy console, you don't have to purchase it. Nobody buying a console forces a company to do a quick turn around of their business practices.

I'll agree with the lot of you. But, imagine for a second that there was a joint-venture on a platform. Say, Sony and Microsoft teaming up to make a console. You'll still have Nintendo, and maybe even other companies that could pop up over time, but merging two of them could make for a damn interesting result, you know?

I'm speaking in hypotheticals though, so don't take me seriously. And of course, I don't necessarily want that, but I'm just pointing out. I don't think one company making one all-powerful console is a good idea at all, BUT, a few companies working in conjunction to make a single console -- that's an idea that could work.

I'm perfectly fine with how things are now though. I just wish fanboys would quit whining. Shut up and go get laid.

Then we wouldn't have the fun of the console wars... and they are a great game of themselves.

Console wars, are usually fanboys just saying their system is better, but I'd rather have it that way than have one big system.
