Hirai: PS3 Could Turn Profit This Year

Supernouva | January 09, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
Sony president Kaz Hirai says that the PS3 could start making a profit this year. With reduced manufacturing costs and newer, exclusive games on the way, Hirai's hopes may well come to pass. PS3 sales went well over the holidays with 1.2 million units sold in North America. PS3s may now be sold at loss, but sales are indeed picking up and Sony might finally see a profit coming from its console this year.
According to Reuters UK, Sony's gaming chief Kaz Hirai has high hopes for 2008, as there is the possibility the company could turn a profit on the PlayStation 3 in the next fiscal year. This is due in part to the declining manufacturing costs and, of course, better - and exclusive - software on the way.

"We want to get to the positive side of the equation as quickly as possible," said Hirai during a news conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "The next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing. We are going through the budgets right now. That (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for."

Hirai's words come hot on the heels of Sony's excellent holiday sales numbers, which stated that 1.2 million PS3 units had been sold in North America.

Good news, but I'd like to hear this news from someone outside of Sony. Any company can toot their own horn to make them look good, but if someone outside says the same, that's a little more factual, as well as more honest.

Wow Sony thinks there going to do well, what a surprise! I agree with them, but it isn't exactly news is it?

Well... So far it has been a slow, uphills battle for the PS3. Since the tides may change, I would qualify this as news.

What are you two knuckleheads talking about? All he said is that this year could possibly begin profitability for the PS3 because of lower manufacturing costs. In fact, the article snippet actually quotes Harai saying, "That (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for." He isn't tooting his own horn, he's just saying they are doing better and because of certain factors, the PS3 could start making money.

Sometimes people forget that Sony had two astounding successes in the PS1 and PS2. The fact that the 3rd took a bit of a downturn and is coming up on a rebound shouldn't surprise anyone. As soon as the horrendous price was taken care of, fortunes began to change, because all in all, it's still a decent gaming system, it's just that other things, like many gamers who can't afford it are finally being taken into consideration

Now that Blu-ray officially won, sounds about right.
though i love big companies selling products at lost so i the comsumer get the best deal out of it.

unlike nintendo and the wii which has been profitable since launch, screw that drop the price to 100 the real value of the console.

      No you actually hate it.
If a company goes bankrupt then your left with a worthless machine. IM NOT SAYING SONY WILL GO BANKRUPT. Just saying that if they take TOO much of a loss they will just pull out leaving you with money wasted.

If Sony cuts the price a little bit more (unless they've already done it here, I'm not sure if they have yet), I'm sure the PS3 will see a massive surge in sales in 2008. The release of MGS4 can't hurt its overall sales, either.

Doesn't it seem that every quarter, Sony predicts that they'll hit big bucks unlike before?

With MGS4, Haze and GT5 coming for the PS3, who doesn't see a sales increase?
