PlayStation 3's true power to be unleashed in 2008

mistermostyn | January 04, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
2007 might not have been the year Sony and its PlayStation fan base were hoping for, but the videogame development community seems to think that 2008 will reveal the pure power within the PS3.
Several prominent industry figures have recently been quoted in a Games Radar report as claiming that after a year of the PS3’s life cycle videogame developers are finally growing more accustomed to channelling the considerable capabilities hidden beneath its ominously rumbling hood.

Well obviously. The true potential of consoles is usually not used until a couple of years after they are out.

If you compare the first games on Playstation 2 to the ones being releasd three or four years later, we can see that there is a world of difference. I expect that the next couple of years we will see the 360 and the PS3 (not sure on Wii) develop into behemoths with more epic games.

Meh. It's all a matter of time, really. I could sort of see PS3 and Xbox dominating if they release their big dogs late in the year. If it is earlier, they might be drowned out in the midst of SSBB and MKWii. After those two games, I haven't heard much anything very important coming out for the Wii afterwards.

The FFXIII games should go far to prove this.......at least that is what we are all hoping for!! Devil May Cry and God of War should do a great job of that as well.

To be honest I didn't expect it to be this soon at all. Good thing though as I don't want to have to wait until 2010 in order to see what the PS3 is capable of.

Yes, it'd be nice to see sooner than later... you know, not when the 8th generation consoles are being made?

The Xbox is already nearing peak performance; 2008 is its third year already. And the PS3 is already looking just as great. And if the PS3's getting better, then it's time for celebration.

Of course, we won't see this power if Sony just lets it games fall through their fingers like they've still been doing.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune uses 33% of the PS3's power, and that's as much as anyone has used so far. I believe Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is at about 25 percent. It's as close as we've gotten.

Wow. You're a tool for trying to put such a percentage on how much of a console's power is used by a particular game.

Truth be told, I think we did. Apparently the PS3's true power was supposed to be out now...

We won't be seeing the PS3's "true power" until the end of the console's life.

Companies keep saying that they have reached the "true power" of the PS3 with a certain game, then the next year an even better game using more of the PS3's "true power" is released. Pfft.
To be honest, I don't think they'll be fully reaching the PS3's full potential for a long time yet.

"We won't be seeing the PS3's "true power" until the end of the console's life."

      NO WAI.

I'd say "True Power" is at the 80%+ mark...everything after that would just be EXTRA gravy....It's pretty much impossible to actualy use 100% of a console's power (invites console failure via excessive strain, and lots of loading issues in games)

80% will allow for awesome visuals and gameplay physics, all at the same time....We won't see games like that until around 09 (MAYBE late 08, depends on what games come out then...FFXIII and Versus XIII could probably do this)....Would blow the 360 away, I should say >_>

No way, hosay. The PS2 has yet to even be perfected .

And you can't say that a game uses "33% of the power". That is just ridiculous. There is not any real ways to prove this. Besides, wouldn't the company use 100% if they knew they were only using 33%?

Given the fact that the PS3 is still sorta new and hard to develop still its impossible for developers to reach 100% in one year, if thats the case the system would be utter shit.

guitcb is correct that most of the games on the PS3 hasn't even hit 50% let alone 40%. Quite honestly at the moment i don't think it needs to be any higher.

However lets not be fooled the 360 has yet to even use 60% of its power or 50% i think so it has ways to go. The 360 has the potential to last the same length as the PS3 lifespan if used correctly.
