CNET comments on Gamespot controversy.

Gothic Girl | November 30, 2007 | News | Company
It seems that Kotaku have finally got a response from CNET in regards to the rumoured dismissal of Jeff Gerstmann over a negative Kane & Lynch review. And despite admitting that, yes, he has been fired, it looks like they aren't too keen on divulging the details of why exactly he was fired. It seems something fishy is afoot.

The gaming community is outraged over his firing, with many Gamespot members cancelling their Gamespot subscriptions, and giving the game negative user-reviews, after hearing the news about Jeff.

The plot thickens ...
We contacted CNET Networks last night to try to get confirmation about the rumoured dismissal of Jeff Gerstmann, former editorial director and veteran reviewer at Gamespot. While Leslie Van Every, Director of Public Relations, did confirm that Gerstmann was no longer with the organisation, she declined to comment on "the status of employees current [or] former", citing CNET Networks' policy. The official statement from Gamespot is after the break.

GameSpot takes its editorial integrity extremely seriously. For over a decade, GameSpot and the many members of its editorial team have produced thousands of unbiased reviews that have been a valuable resource for the gaming community. At CNET Networks, we stand behind the editorial content that our teams produce on a daily basis.

As many of our readers and peers have noticed, Gamespot is no longer running the prominent Kane & Lynch: Dead Men ads on its web site. They were removed late last night, a few hours after publication of the original story. It is unknown whether this change was in response to the rumour that Gerstmann was fired over reasons surrounding the Eidos published game or if the promotion had simply run its course.

Its not like gamespot will come out and say it, unless they deem it necessary to the public. I bet they don't want any more rumors going out.

Gamespots reviews have been Bullshit for quite a while, especially their PS3 ones.

They deserve all the shit they're getting thrown at them.

"For over a decade, GameSpot and the many members of its editorial team have produced thousands of unbiased reviews"

Most of their reviews have been bullshit for all systems. Except for maybe the 360, because I haven't seen those reviews.

The firing is still bullshit, though.

Some reviews have been good and some have been very biased when you compare the consoles, I hope I hear the sound of more reviewers being kicked out of there door soon.

Their response is as expected. Their spin on the situation won't help them regain any of the editorial integrity that they have lost, and what little reputation the site had is all but tainted now.

My god, someone's fired, and they attack a game for it...when it may not be the actual reason? These gamers should stop believing in bullshit rumours and wait for the truth rather than lash out at Kane & Lynch, or GameSpot for that matter.

Not saying that either is innocent, Eidos and GameSpot, but stop going by rumours and be patient. It's funny...I'm willing to bet that just about all those reviewers haven't even played the game...
