Super Mario Galaxy sells 500,000 in first week

Wii Network | November 23, 2007 | News | Wii
Super Mario Galaxy has sold through 500,000 units in its first week of sale in the USA. This makes SMG the fastest selling game for Wii so far. Sales are expected to continue strong with the holiday shopping.
In the USA, Super Mario Galaxy has sold through an impressive 500,000 copies in it's first week of sale.

Sales are expected to continue strong with the frantic Christmas shopping near full swing and Black Friday just around the corner.

"Super Mario Galaxy had the strongest one-week debut of any Wii game to date and has also become the best-selling Mario title ever in its first week," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.

Let's hope Super Mario Galaxy's sales continue in the same style in Europe and the sales live up to the game's recently acquired highest rated title ranking on Gamerankings.com.

That's half the amount of preorders halo 3 have gotten =o

Umm, around 2 million copies of Halo 3 were preordered an/or reserved and bought on release. So it doesn't compare in the slightest to Halo 3's sales figures. That doesn't go to say that I am a fanboy or anything. But it's more like a quarter.

Anyway, this looks like the only Wii game that I am at all interested in, it looks pretty innovative and interesting as far as Mario games go, and brings a new level of gameplay to the table instead of just recycling the previous games.

Haha, just wait for Super Smash Bros. Brawl to come out.

Anyway, I'm glad something good has been released on the Wii, but I still feel like the overall game line up is fairly lackluster. I guess innovation comes at a price.

I can tell you with games like Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed and UT3 those are killer must have titles on the PS3 considering the PS3 version of COD is basically superior to the 360 counter part. Im no fanboy but its true i sent an article about it. with those 3 games i can't see why anyone wouldn't get a PS3 now.

Eh, I have a Wii. I have it for like 6 games, but I've got a 360 for everything else I'll need.

In my eyes there has been a few good games for the Wii. But this tops them all. Nice to see that it is off to a good start as of right now.

i think the wii is starting to come around. now that games other than party games (all minigames) are starting to be produced, the sales are going to continue to climb.
also, since this is a new console, the hardware is still being tested. if a beginning product is selling this good, a later game might actually compare to the H3 sales.

Guitar Hero III proves that if 3rd parties are willing to make great games, then they will sell on Wii. The Wii version of GHIII was very close to the 360 version in terms of sales, which in my eyes is pretty impressive. It's all down to the 3rd parties now...Nintendo have done and are doing enough by already releasing Zelda, SMG and Metroid in Wii's first year and SSBB and Mario Kart next year.

WTF! Why is Halo's sales being compared to Mario's sales?! No shit Halo sold well. And no shit that most games won't even come close to getting those sales (no matter how popular the game/series might be). Geez.

Mario is Nintendo's trademark character and Mario games always sell thousands at the release. However SSBB's sales will eclipse this games

Can't say I wasn't expecting it to do well; it's build-up has been pretty big and obviously as shown lots of people have been waiting anxiously for it. Gz Nintendo.

If Super Mario Galaxy made that many sales in that amount of time, think of how many units SSBB will sell...
