Playstation 3 Outsells Wii For Second Week In Japan!

ITANI | November 22, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
With the new 40Gb Playstation 3 package and Dynasty Warriors 6 recent release, the Playstation 3 has now outsold the Nintendo Wii for 2 weeks in Japan. With Mario Galaxy isn't doing that well as sales go and not many games to look forward to after Super Smash Bros. Brawl. What does the Wii have for the future?

The PS3 has sold 53,000 units the week starting 12th November and ending on the 18th. While the Wii sales have decreased to 36,000.

Also the Xbox 360 has had a 5,700 increase in sells.
The latest sales are in from Japan for the week starting 12/11 and ending 18/11, and surprisingly, the PS3 is holding on in there with its new 40GB model, fighting off Nintendo’s Wii for another week.

I'm gonna wait for Media Create numbers to get the full sense of what the gap is (especially with discrepancies between Famitsu and MC numbers), but I don't doubt that the PS3 sold more than the Wii. The overall lead is still pretty large, and all this is small chipping away at the lead.

Super Mario Galaxy is actually doing pretty decently, it's just not up to expected numbers. There is a noticeable shift to handheld gaming in Japan, and that market is getting kind of funky.

Expect a more full write-up from me with the MC numbers tonight, but here's an overview:

Basing on what GPara has (MC Top 30), the two new releases in Japan last week were Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Wii) and Heavenly Sword (PS3). These PS3 sales are on the strength of the White 40GB and Musou 5, but not Heavenly Sword. According to GPara, RE:UC did around 83k, which is a pretty good first week, whereas Heavenly Sword only did around 15k.

If someone could tell me the upcoming Japanese releases for the PS3, that would be great, because I don't know them. However, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii) and Dragon Quest IV (NDS) come out this week, and Wii Fit (Wii) has a December 1st release, so expect Wii sales to only go up from now.

More appropriately would be that Sony keeps improving their support to their 3rd party developers so they can produce titles like this.

DW6 is by Koei not SCE

I Know DW6 is buy Koei I've played every single game they've made. Besides I never said sony created Koei, read more carefully i said DW6 is a good game, and that I hope Sony can keep doing what there doing as in making graphics great for games.

Sony don't make the graphics in the games good, KOEI do that. Sony have given them the ability to make good graphics yes, but it's up to the developers to make them better.

And also... it's "by" not "buy"... and it's also "knew" and not "new"

I never said you said Sony made Koei. You're now trying to force words in my mouth to try and save face.

Maybe you need to see your quote again.

"I just hope Sony can keep doing what there doing and make great games."

Regardless NVIDIA made the RSX graphics core not Sony, had this been the PS2 then you could credit them with the processor and gpu design. This time around it gets put into IBM and NVIDIA as well as numerous other companies.

Technically you can also hope that PC graphic solutions companies and mainframe technology companies can continue to thrive so the next PS can be just as big of a step forward.

It's true but I prefer giving publishing houses or developers the deserve at least. It's bad enough with most titles these days. I mean look at GoW, somehow it went from being an Epic title to an MS title to a flame war when UT3 was going out for 360 and PS3 as well as of course the PC.

Even worse were the 360 fans up in arms when the PC fanbase of Epic got bonus content for the game as it was an "Xbox" game.

Just a question though, since Sony's system has the RSX graphics core its still part of the PS3 which is under Sony Regardless who made it, so they still gave them the core for them to make good graphics. Im not trying to not give to the publishing houses what they deserve, im just saying its in their system. Although thats what i think its probably wrong anyway.

Good for Sony this is just going to be getting better and better. While they still have some numbers to climb its in a step in the right direction.

Now if only Sony could pull their heads out of the trash in the US and do what they did in Japan...

Because honestly, even 12 months later, PS3 still has crap for a game library; few decent exclusives and a bunch of ports.

Maybe it's because a lot of people there already have Wiis? They're bound to stop selling at some point. I mean once most everybody who wants a Wii have one, of course the sales will go down. It's total sales that matter.

Super Mario Galaxy certainly isn't selling that well, but in the long-run it will be outselling everything in the current top 10. Mario games never sell like crazy initially in Japan, but they're able to stay in the top 10 list for quite a while. Like New Super Mario bros, for instance.

Meh, I really don't care. As long as I am having fun with the system I bought, I could care less if it gets outsold.

I might buy a PS3 bundle package depending on how much I get for Christmas. Heavenly Sword seems to be drawing me in. Too bad I don't have an HD-TV to show off the Blu-Ray.

I wonder how long the PS3 can keep this up.
