Ex-Developer has harsh words for PS3

Gothic Girl | October 27, 2007 | News | Playstation 3
Ex-Harmonix employee and Playstation 3 developer, Jason Booth, recently voiced his opinion on the Playstation 3 console ... and it wasn't all nice!
He didn't leave anything untouched, commenting on the PS3's hardware, low sales, as well as the low-quality ports from other consoles.
Former Harmonix employee and one-time PlayStation 3 developer Jason Booth has posted a harsh evaluation of Sony's latest console, refuting claims that PS3 developers are "lazy"—resulting in ports of Xbox 360 games that often perform worse than the original—and attempting to "explain exactly why ports to the ps3 will never be as good as their 360 counter parts, and why most ps3 exclusives will likely continue to suck." Oh, boy, this should be good. Booth does his best to pick apart what seem like hardware advantages, mainly the Cell and Blu-ray, and how they may wind up being nothing but hindrances.

He echoes Gabe Newell's assessment of the PlayStation 3 hardware at certain points, writing that "code needed to make the PS3 work is most likely only useful to you on the PS3" and that the reasons for dedicating the effort to optimizing the hardware are dwindling. He means the fact that PS3 sales are in the basement.

Booth later writes that "Sony let their hardware be designed by a comity [sic] of business interests", dooming it to third place in the current generation forever.

As merely a consumer, not a developer, it's certainly difficult to disagree that the current third-party offerings on the PlayStation 3 are disheartening. Games perform worse, they're often delayed and they are often devoid of features their predecessors or Xbox 360 counterparts ship with.

My god, the PS3 has been out a whole 11 months and its doomed forever! LOL..this is getting so tired now. Lets say the PS3 does in fact end up in 3rd place in the 'war.' So the fcuk what? Unless I'm mistaken, I thought we were all here to play videogames. Why so much mud slinging and politics? Isn't it tired yet? And as a developer, Mr.Booth, who's fault is it for a lackluster port?

And we care why? This guy is full of himself thinking that just because he is the one saying this that it actually means something.

He obviously hasn't seen the line up for the end of this year / throughout 2008 ^^

Also, I think you'll find that the PS3 is doing just as well, if not better, than the 360 did during its first 11 or so months, its only real advance being that it came out a year beforehand.

... Notice how its always the Ex-Developers that start mouthing off at consoles as well ...

Hold up...Is he honestly saying that ports are naturally bad on the PS3? That's easily debatable, I mean Oblivion performs much better on the PS3, The Darkness is pretty much the same, so is GRAW2, so you're gonna have to forgive me if I call bullshit on your claims.

The coding may be hard now because it's new, but devs will get used to it and it will become easier and streamlined. PS2 took awhile for people to get used to and eventually max out its capabilities. This dude sounds pretty short sighted..

Wow, what a pathetic developer! With his mindset everyone should work on the same console and then guess what, game prices will be even more expensive than they are now because there would be no competition between consoles. Competition is what drives any industry.

    *bleep*ing pathetic.
"code needed to make the PS3 work is most likely only useful to you on the PS3"
That's the idea, this is clearly coming from a developer who does a lot of multiplatform titles and just wants to cash in rather than create a really excellent game that is designed for a certain set of hardware.

No one can refute the fact that the exclusive titles are undoubtedly the best for a specific console. There are great multiplatform titles as well for sure, but it's a fact that exclusive titles benefit from a higher level of polish and focus on delivering a unique experience.

I agree with iLLmatic. Play the *bleep*ing game and enjoy it. Don't worry about the goddamn competition.

Oblivion doesn't perform better on a PS3. It looks a tad better and thats it.

But back to topic. He's pretty much saying what people were saying before the 360 and PS3 released. PS3's kinda gonna be a bitch to program for. Why would this have changed now? This dude is probably just frustrated with problems that porting to PS3 presents.

Exclusives are a different story though. A lot of them have been lack-luster up til' now. Even ones that were supposed to be big hits like LAIR but I do believe MGS4 will change that. Drake's Fortune still has everything to prove though.

And what's this I've heard about better loading times or loading in general? And it's not just a little bit of polish, it looks a lot better in comparison.

Actually some developers (like the ones that made GRAW2) are saying pretty much otherwise, how it's NOT difficult at all. And you'll really have to take their word for it, cuz GRAW2 is STILL an amazing piece of work, no matter what reviewers wanna nit pick with it (colors and all that bullshit is really all they can pick).

I may be mistaken but if I remember the disclosure papers back when GRAW2 was announced, the game runs on the Unreal 3 engine. As such chalk up the reliability of frame-rates and graphical accomplishment to epic for programming a multi-platform engine that does work quite well.

I guess if you're going to talk about accomplishments you would probably want to stick to games / companies not relying on engines that have been developed for mass licensing.

The point I was trying to make was about how nicely GRAW2 was ported on the PS3, I'm aware the engine is not theirs (like how the majority of next gen games basically rely on the Unreal Engine).

I can see the PS3/360 competition of sorts is going to continue to spark fights for a long while to come.

Honestly I'm a lil tired of it. PS3 fanboys will continue to defend the PS3 even though they may be wrong. 360 fanboys will do the exact samn damn thing. Anyone in the middle who has an unbiased opinion gets squashed cause it's not in league with the fanboys.

Anyway, I can see a lil bit of what this guy is trying to say, but I don't think it's gonna be too bad after the usual multi-platform companies get a grip on the PS3. Personally I'm still not a fan of the PS3 due to the bloody high price for getting a good deal.

Wow another person who got his panties in a twist. Seriously stop talking crap, are you a gamer or someone who likes starting crap.
Yes we all know its a little difficult to program on the PS3 but the people who actually work on the system claims that its not all that hard.
Maybe the concept of working and trying has been lost in the sauce for awhile.
Hell most if not all of the PS systems wasn't cake walk to make games and two out of 4 has won top in the "war", things take time to understand. Stop complaining. Man he's acting like a small child.
