Video Games Crack Down on Cheating

Big Willie | October 08, 2007 | News | Linux PC Gaming Tech/Hardware
Since we get a lot of insider information, I thought it would be nice to take a look at what we know from the outside. Here's an interesting little article on the subject of cheating.
Some players give themselves the ability to magically see and shoot through walls. Others find a way to fly, making them nearly impossible to defeat.

Cheating like this in video games has a long and even respected tradition. Games have often slyly included ways -- intentionally or not -- for sophisticated players to hack into the software and then skip levels or take on supernatural powers.

But these days, the subject is getting a more serious look. Unlike older games, today's are networked to be played with strangers over the Internet. And now, real money is at stake.

What do they mean by "And now, real money is at stake"? How can they lose money from a game because of some people hacking into them... if it's an online game like WOW then i see why but if it's like GTA or something like that then i don't see how there going to lose money...

Cheating has always been fun on GTA and other games because of the things that arn't humanly possible (e.g: jumping of a skyscraper and not dying!)

I first play through the game itself and after i've had enough i stroll the internet for cheats and so i use them and (determing how effectionate the cheats are) i save the game or i just turn the console off if it's a cheat like 'Unlimited Ammo/Guns ect'!

There are games out there where you use real money, there is an FPS currently in beta where you spend real money to buy the weapons and ammo and the aim of the game is to make more money from kills and picking up stuff in the world, cheaters in this domain could easily be considered criminals in some way since they are unlawfully cheating the system to make themselves more money...

They are not talking about GTA, that game until now could not be played online on consoles, and just like Saints Row its cheat codes will not work online so everything is fine... They are on about games that are online only and or have a more favored online component, such as CounterStrike or Unreal Tournament where the gamers take it seriously, at times their clan could be something they run their lives around... And with real money FPS's coming out cheating needs to be stopped whether that can be done is another matter but they have to try.

the article was obviously written by a journalist who is looking to make a story out of nothing. I'm willing to bet that the example about playing WoW in god mode is a scam. Online games are difficult to "cheat" because everything talks to the server and in WoW's case every attack has a cooldown so you can't spam 100 attacks/second

Sure, take out all of it from the online games where you PAY for things, but not from others that are used for our own pleasure and personal use without doing anyone any harm. I mean, I don't mind so much, because I don't use cheats on games anymore anyway, I've outgrown all that, but hackers really do need to be stopped from online gaming. It's amazing when an online game loses its fun so fast, thanks to hackers.
