Sony announces latest PlayStation sales figures

Linkin Park Fan | September 20, 2007 | News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
Today at TGS, Sony announced how much they have sold with there Playstation systems. So far the Playstation 2 has sold 120 million units. The Playstation Portable has sold 26 million units. And what about Sony's newest system, the Playstation 3? It has sold about 5 to 6 million units. Very close to 6 million units. Sony is planning to sell 11 million Playstation 3's by the end of the year.
It's keynote time, and that means it's number time.

So where do the PlayStation platforms stand? PS2 is sitting pretty at over 120 million units sold. PSP is at a respectable 26 million sold, with 30 million expected to be surpassed shortly.

So where does that leave PS3? According to Kaz, PS3 has sold in between 5 and 6 million units, leaning slightly towards the 5 million end.

Expectations are high for the holidays however - Sony expects to reach 11 million PS3's by the end of the year. We reckon reaching that goal without a price cut will be a challenge and perhaps even miracle.

We'll keep you updated on sales of all PlayStation platforms as the year progresses.

5.5 million PS3's sold is pretty damn good considering we're not even at a year into the PS3
    s lifespan.

The PS3 is doing just fine, it just looks bad compared to a $400 dollar cheaper console and a console that's been out for almost 2 years now.

The figure most companies and production houses worry about isn't the hardware but the consumer ratio of accessories and software - units.

That's the only real hurdle anyone faces. You could sell 18 million units in a year but if your ratio is awful then whats the point for companies to produce titles or anything for it. All 3 of them have to concern themselves with this since it's the first year that all of them are fighting it out.

6 million in a year is a lot considering the PS2 barely sold that many even in its best years

Edit- sorry I looked at the magazine I got that information from and apparently it was only in Amercia. I don't know which year it was because the magazine is really old. Still the PS3 is selling better than the PS2 did to begin with

Exactly why people shouldn't be saying the PS3 is a failure or going to die, its clearly making new records with each passing months in the first year of its life. I mean after all PS3 is the fasting selling PS console to hit 1 million sales in 5 months.

I don't even know where to go with this. Like, did you intentionally butcher your figures for that one? In the best years of the PS2 it barely did 6 million? I mean I don't even have to go further than wiki to show you this figure.

"As of March 2007, 117.89 million PS2 units have been shipped worldwide"

So go ahead and do the math for me, around 6 million times 7 years. Yeah you can go ahead and serve your words up on a plate and eat them now.

I'm shocked that finalblade in all his lack of statistical evidence missed that one.

The PS3 is doing fine, just fine. The PS2 sold less than the PS3 when it first released.

I don't think the PS3 will make 11 million by the end of the year. It is possible and not "way out there" and ambitious but I doubt it will happen. And the PSP is man's best friend.

I think eleven million consoles by the end of the year is pushing it a little too much. =/

It's definetly pushing it but the given amount of time left in the year and Christmas is a good time to increase sales by a few million. So I think that's why Sony thinks the PS3 will sell that many consoles.

Meh, 11,000,000 is a big number. If they get lucky, they could sell that many, but they shouldn't get their hopes up too high.

Err I doubt 11million will be reached by the end of the year even if they are banking on the holidays to get them some sales, considering 11 months has only got you half of what you'd like to achieve within the next 2 months.. it's not going to happen. I guess theres some good sales figures for the PS2 though.
