Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!

ITANI | September 09, 2007 | News | Dreamcast Misc
Today marks the 8th Birthday of the Sega Dreamcast console. A console that is strongly underrated by gamers. A console that was released at a wrong time.

This great console had numerous games that have been turned into classics in gamers eyes. Games such as Shenmue for instance. One of best RPG's in it's time and now a classic. Another game is Sonic Adventure. One of the fastest and best Sonic games in 3D.

Today we celebrate the consoles 8th Birthday. So all you Sega fans out there that appreciate this console & wish it a Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Sega Dreamcast!
Today marks the eighth birthday of one of the most underrated and unappreciated consoles ever to hit the market, The Sega Dreamcast. The little system gave birth to some really great games including Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Rez, Wetrix, PowerStone, and many others. Although it didn't do to well commercially and eventually left the market when some heavy competition appeared on the scene, The Dreamcast nevertheless garnered a rabid cult -like following. Despite it's failure on the commercial front, the system still lives on thanks to the tireless efforts of homebrew creators and fans, giving extended life to an otherwise dead system. So, Happy Birthday Dreamcast, we hardly knew ye

    R.I.P.

I never had a chance to get one of them. I wanted one, although I only played if a few times. The last game I played on it was Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 at a Wal Mart kiosk. It was a good console, but it was very short-lived. I still kind of want one, just because I wanted one back then. I never really had a Sega console, but I've wanted one since the Genesis.

An era of gaming that was quite memorable, they did a lot with the console in a short amount of time. Even now the 3rd party scene manages to turn out minor additions to the software, although at a much slower rate after Sony put Lik-Sang out of business.

Happy Birthday my beautiful Sega Dreamcast You are one of my favorite consoles ever, and I will forever miss the countless hours of magic and wonder I spent with you throughout our rather short time together.

Edit: The two games pictured were my favorite games for the system, along with the Power Stone series.

I loved the Dreamcast. It could have been the console war winner if it didn't have much commercial issue. When the Gamecube and Xbox came out my friends would be bragging about it and I'd be like "Dude I have the Dreamcast." Then they'd say "What is a Dreamcast?"

Oh yeah, that interactive memory card with the screen was an awesome idea.

Sega... Most of their consoles have been the most superior on the market, yet all released too late into the battle. The Genesis released to battle the NES, just a few months later, it's crushed by the new SNES. The Dreamcast, released to combat the N64 and PS1, soon crushed by PS2, Xbox, and GC. If they had had proper timing, and didn't release all their Genesis add-on failures, they would easily be towering over the other companies.
If Sega is secretly developing the Ultimate Console, they better release it at the right time.

I beg to differ, Sega consoles while good wasn't the superior on the market. Its just they didn't do the proper things to make the console great in the market, it was there own downfall that made dreamcast die. Nintendo and Sony are the two that clear out matched Sega consoles every year.

Also Dreamcast was crushed b4 PS2, gamecube and xbox came out. sega most likely isn't making one, there much better at games. Apple will most likely come out with one. That would be killer.

But I beg to differ as well. One because the response you posted was utterly confusing but also inaccurate.

Marketing was one of their biggest pitfalls, actually it still is for the most part. While they rode a high train in the Genesis days, things ended up falling down around the Sega CD and 32x days. The marketing team dropped the ball in the US and the $399 Saturn was shunned by gamers in favor of the PSX. After a long bout trying to bounce back, the company suffered through a growing debt in the console division, the dreamcast was a bid to bring their technology from the arcade division to the home market once again. It worked on a level and it experimented in online console gaming through PSO, Quake 3, UT and more. The network itself wasn't that bad for the majority being 56k'ers.

Seeing as they're still producing arcade hardware in-house I'd say that it's silly to count any company out 100%. It's not like they're making new games based on 8-9 year old hardware, if you thought that was the case though then thats quite odd. To say they can only make games is partially true, they can make games, but to run their mainstream arcade titles they also need to produce good hardware to support it, it's ok I'm sure you didn't consider that aspect of the company at all seeing as they have franchises like Gameworks which at one point featured the latest hardware innovations by the company. (it's a bit slower given the slowdown in the US for the arcade scene)

The fact that you discounted their departure based on anything other than the fact that Saturn the 32x and the Sega CD put them in a massive debt that they were only spiraling into as they launched the dreamcast is a good one though.

Apple is too busy eyeballing the 700MHz spectrum against google, if they're looking to dump $9 billion there then I doubt they're going to be in for a gaming console, unless that'll be the 7000th use of the iphone guts.

Actually you just listed similar stuff like i did. You stated Marketing well its Sega's fault that they didn't market it better, Saturn can't market itself.

Also im not discounting anything i mean sure they have Lost lots of money from Saturn and CD but The 32X was pretty cool i liked it. But it could have contributed. But I don't think Sega will make another system to be honest Xbox and PS3 Wii would just totally kill it. Also Just like Saturn MS brought about xbox at the wrong time which they are paying for it right now. Hell There should have been 4 consoles out this gen if Infinium Labs realeased the "Phantom". But since it couldn't compete with PS3 and xbox with there high powered Machine it pulled out. Or put it on hold. Im assuming Apple could very well come in next gen or Infinite labs could make the "Phantom" So much stronger and next gen it could very well be the next big hit. Thats my point anyway.

          Listed similar stuff?

          While good wasn't the superior?
They didn't do the proper things to make the console great?
Nintendo and sony out matched sega every year?
It was crushed before the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox arrived?
Apple is going to come out with a system?

Right. you totally made detailed posting citing things that I did. There's a difference between how we post, I cite things and you make blanket generalizations. Don't confuse the two.

Also you're trying to play it like you came up with marketing as their problem, no duh I said it right off the bat.

"Marketing was one of their biggest pitfalls"

I don't know how you could interpret that any other way really. Please don't try to pawn my statements as your own.

The Saturn was released at an absurdly high price point, a time when $399 was insane compared to the pricing on the PSX, they went with a more complicated processor (SH2) and overall while they tried to push the boundary of technology they failed to account for SDK's and developer support. Even if they released it at a different time the complex nature of programming for the system would leave many in the dust and many primary 3rd party companies ignoring the system. It hit when it should have but the hardware was all wrong for the period. (although it played awesome arcade ports of 2D fighters)

The 32x was a flop, they had technology coming in on the system that would have afforded them a longer duration without bringing in extra hardware essentially that ended up only really supporting a handful of games because of the rushed nature. The Sega CD also hit a pitfall by having to produce multiple models and eventually axing the legacy model for the original system.

Actually if you did any research at all you would have realized that Infinium Labs was a wash from the very start, it was never coming out, they screwed investors and ran. HardOCP uncovered that ages ago, you should research your claims. Infinium labs is history and it's even less likely to see Apple in the arena given that they have their targets elsewhere and they're up to their elbows in new tech.
