BioShock: Not So Perfect?

xsynergyx | September 07, 2007 | News | XBOX 360
You've seen the reviews. They rave about how the game, BioShock for the Xbox 360 is fantastic, giving it 100% ratings, but they don't seem to go into details why it's so perfect. Stuart Pearce of The Digital Gamer suggests that reviewers might have been 'blinded' by the awesome graphics and sound to notice the gameplay, one of the most, if not the most important aspect of the game. What about the gameplay? I'll leave that up to you to read at the source.
I know I'm asking for trouble here, but BioShock is not a ten out of ten game. Having completed it, I'm thinking it's more of a seven. maybe an eight. Yes, it looks amazing, yes, the voice acting is some of the best ever, yes, the 1950s aesthetic works a treat, and yes, the weaponry does allow for some sandbox experimentation.

I will admit, no video game can be perfect.

But Bioshock is as pretty *bleep*ing close as a video game can get to it.

Finally, a proper review/scoring (albiet, a short one)...

I have maintained that pretty much no game will ever be worth 100%...

Though I know this must be a good game...this article states why it isn't so perfect...

It's not perfect, but it definitely isn't comparable to other games that receive a 7/8 score. The Darkness received an 8/10 from most reviewers; anyone who has played both can tell you that Bioshock is miles above that game.

So true. I couldn't understand why in hell The Darkness got 8/10s, but if you consider it so I can totally understand why Bioshcok has been getting perfect scores.

          Uhhhh, what!!??

The Darkness was a fantastic game. Great storyline, great graphics, great voice-acting, and great gameplay. Why would you think it sucked for?

And this points out the people who give it perfect reviews are biased. I even stated in another article that even Bioshock a good game as it is doesn't deserve a perfect score. Especially not from 6 or 7 game sites.

Blinded by awesome graphics and sound? I didn't think they were THAT good, but they were up to par.

I think what peopled were blinded by was how *bleep*ing good this game was in comparison to all the other shitty FPS that have been coming out in recent years on all the consoles. This game actually had an engaging storyline with an immersive setting and a lot of great gameplay elements all wrapped up into one package.

Everyone trying to downplay BioShock's excellence at being an artistic masterpiece and an amazing gaming experience is just a hack that's looking to make a fanbase with all the leftover people that didn't enjoy BioShock as much as the rest of the community.

of course the hype will inevitably create anti-hype. When something has too broad a consensus, there will be the few who retract and grimace at the widely popular opinion.

I completely agree but I think the fact that one site giving it a 10/10 influenced the other sites as well

Just another asshat trying to be different.

Unless Mass Effect blows us away, Bioshock is game of the year, hands down.

As I play Bioshock more I notice sound defects and a few minor glitches, but that's about it. So sure it's not a perfect 10, but it's very close and deserves every bit of praise it gets.

That's why number scales are flawed, BioShock totally deserves a 10, sound defects and minor glitches aren't enough to derail a perfect score in some games. You have to take into consideration the scope of things, besides every game has glitches.

well.. you know how it is. whenever someone makes a really badass game, there's gonna be a few people to pop out the woodwork and proclaim how bad it is in their opinion. people like this are usually just craving some shock attention

Meh. I still don't think a game can be perfect if it has no multiplayer of any kind. And does Bioshock have any online or splitscreen?

Bioshock doesn't need multiplayer. You'd lose all the atmosphere with multiplayer unless it was a LAN ala System Shock 2. It would be great put into Bioshock yes, but it's not needed.

Problem with Bioshock that is was System Shock 2 hell even the Shoda....Fontaine twist was the same. Sure the game was made a little easier for the console tards but it's still the same.

However, Bioshock is a 10/10 game. If you haven't played System Shock it's even better. System Shock 2 was a 11/10 game. Best FPS ever.

Bioshock is a contender, I'm stil playing around though with other titles, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one that comes to mind as a title on my list of titles to play.

Honestly one of the most comical reviews of the game comes out of the escapist.

    http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/1394-Zero-Punctuation-BioShock

Sadly I ended up forgetting so many of the elements of system shock 2 that were rehashed for Bioshock.

Bioshock is largely about the atmosphere. I don't know that my experiences watching it be played would be augmented any by actually playing it myself.

As an experience, the game lives up to the review scores. The counterpoint article can't reasonably judge the game solely on combat mechanics, because it's leaving out the critical aspect of what makes the game so memorable and compelling.

Even still Sonic Bioshock doesn't deserved to be 10/10, I would give it a universal 9/10 but thats it. No game should be perfect cause nothing can be perfect. I mean opinion reviews fine but not professional reviews. My personal opinion review on FF7 is its perfect, but as a professional review i say its more 8.8/10 or 9/10.

I have to admit, no video game can be perfect. And Bioshock is severely lacking the gameplay element.

And today's lesson is: Never judge a video game by it's graphics and voice.

No video game can be perfect due to opinion. People have different opinions and it is impossible to please every single person/gamer in the world with a game. One won't like the gameplay, one wants better graphics, one wants online, one wants it to be an RPG, not a RTS, etc. I, personally, would never rate a game a perfect 100%. However, BioShock sure sounds like a hell of a lot of fun.
