Bioshock Needs No Multiplayer

mclazyj | September 07, 2007 | News | PC XBOX 360 Company Misc
Bioshock currently does not have a multiplayer component. This was done by design by the Irrational Games crew. They have mentioned on several occasions why they focused on single player. Ken Levine has mentioned that the focus would make for a better single player experience because they would not be distracted by a multiplayer component. Several times in the past, Irrational has added multiplayer to games like Freedom Force and System Shock 2 with poor results.
Well, I have to disagree on this one. I think one of the reasons that Bioshock was so highly regarded and had such a well thought out single player campaign is because it was single player only, without the distraction of a multiplayer mode taking away from the game. And Irrational/2K Boston has some history with adding multiplayer support in its games and it is interesting for those that may be unaware.

And we care about this because?

Multiplayer in Bioshock would probably be nothing more than a add on which would take away from the seriousness of the Singleplayer

I don't know why people expect multiplayer in every first person game. Bioshock focuses on exploring a gorgeous underwater city and messing around with weird powers that nobody else has. Metroid Prime 3 focuses on exploring various planets, investigating disappearances and, again, dealing with weird powers (although a number of enemies have a limited version of it). Neither needs multiplayer, neither would really work out in a multiplayer game mostly due to the weapons and gameplay. They are designed for the single player mode.

I'm happy with them both being singe player only, and I love both of them to death. Easily the greatest two games of the year so far, by a large margin. Two deep, polished single player mode is better than a shallow multiplayer mode. Without a doubt, sacrificed would have had to be made to get one. Shoot 'em ups and other action games need multiplayer, but games that thrive on their atmosphere and isolation do not.

Well same can be said about halo 3 Gogetenks. Halo 3 can also be able to explore the storyline. I think Bioshock could use a muliplayer if they actually take the time to make it good. Just because there past experiences wasn't all great doesn't mean they should just stop. An example is DMC2. We all know the people who played it said it sucked very bad, did that tell capcom to stop, no. They continued and made a awesome DMC3 game. And no doubt DMC4 for will be the killer title to surpass DMC1.

You're comparing the quality of Halo 3's storyline to that of Bioshock.

It don't compare, therefore, you can't employ your 'one size fits all' approach.

Im not comparing quality so your point is Moot. I was saying that People play Halo for the story the same way as Bioshock, And afterwards People would like to play the multiplayer.

Its a general statement. There will be differences in story thats obvious but im was not referring about the differences. Not every Halo fan plays for the Multiplayer. Me being one of them, but i will play Multi if im at my friends or bored and want to play a game like Halo.

Anyone who says Bioshock Multiplayer would be bad needs to play a 4 player System Shock 2 LAN.

Some games, like BioShock. Don't need multiplayer.

Why? They are more focused on its single player mode. Halo 2 had multiplayer, its was very good but its single player wasn't enjoyable as Halo: CE.

Multiplayer is a large potion to a game, but if you want a decent single player. Its better that it lays off with less attention.
