Xbox 3 Already Being Planned

JJBDude | August 19, 2007 | News | XBOX 360
I'm sure some of you are already aware than plans and development of future next next gen consoles are underway, but for those of you not aware recently Chris Lewis a Microsoft EMEA spoke saying work is underway on a Xbox 3.
Microsoft EMEA veep Chris Lewis says the company is already working on its next next-generation console because "we have to".

Preliminary work is already under way, he told UK games site Kikizo.

"You can't sit back on your laurels in this business - the consumer won't let you, the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now," he said.

The research and development practices of the console division are "no different than any other part of Microsoft" though, he insisted.

The news that Microsoft is already working on an Xbox 360 successor won't come as much surprise, mind - having been last to market with its first Xbox, the company was first to market in the next generation.

Um no, Blu-ray is patented to Sony or under sony. they would have to give royalties to Sony which they won't.

    This is not news.

News would be if they were doing nothing about this in the R&D department.

I wasn't too sure if it was either, but then I came to the conclusion that there would be some people here on Gamegrep unaware that Xbox 3 is already being thought about and planned, so decided to give the article ago and I guess the reviewers thought so too.

I wonder what Microsoft and the other companies are going to put into the next batch of consoles.

And are they really going to call it the XBOX720?

[sarcasm]No really? I woulda never have guessed Microsoft making another console! [/sarcasm]

Of course they were gonna make another console. It's not like it was that hard to see it coming. All things considered, I'm gonna be puttin my money on Microsoft's new console completely obliterating the PS3 as long as they don't do something insanely stupid. The PS3 so far hasn't exactly been off to a good start. No real exclusives, the bloody insanely high price (I'd be better off buying a new computer with some of the best of the best parts for $900 + the games and whatnot I'd have to pay for a PS3) and the favoritism with the US only price drop (please, don't tell me it's just cause they were phasing out with one type of the PS3, maybe they were but it doesn't change the facts that they coulda dropped the price for the UK, Australia, etc). But hey, I could be wrong.

Also please, if you intend on replying to my comment, don't do it with fanboyism.

watch, their idea of Xbox 3 is just Xbox360 that doesn't overheat. That's enough of a technological revolution for them. Forget 3 yr. warranties... why not actually make a better system? Good thinking microsoft. way to head into the future.

That would make me and plenty other 360 owners annoyed at the fact our console hasn't been able to reach it's full potential. And anyway, the technology isn't around yeah to go forward to the next next gen already.

Actually, a lot of it probably is. It just isn't cheap enough to use for mass production of a home console.

I wonder what games we can play with this console. It had better be good!

And XBOX 720 is quite a funny name. I wonder, will they come up with 4320 or 8640 consoles...

    Silver Mirror | August 20, 2007
The 720 is probably not the real name for the console.

Anyway this is hardly surprising, Sony and Nitnendo are probably already planning there next consoles as well

Wow i didn't realize that the xbox 720 was going for a teal bluish color.

Most likely the new name is 540.

      Are you *bleep*ing serious...

It's not too hard to understand that the 720 logo is a speculative user edit of the 360 logo, not even Microsoft would give it as terrible a name as Xbox720, and 540 is just as bad.

Yeah Strayfire is right, it's not official that the next console is going to be called Xbox 720, that's why I put Xbox 3 in the title of the article. I couldn't think of a picture to use and googled Xbox 720 and found that nice image, thought it would create a debate and it has.

Think on this, would you buy xbox 3 over PS4 when it sounds like its inferior, this was the same reason why they couldn't put xbox 2 against PS3 cause people would get the idea PS3 is more advance and better.

Like i said b4 its either going to be called 540 or 720 there is no other name they could name it.

You have got a good point there finalblade (won't let me reply directly to you), I never thought of it like that. Calling it the 540 just won't feel right, it's got to be 720 in my opinion.

They should have saved '360' for the third Xbox, makes more sense, no? But yeah, this was bound to happen, although they have lost a lot of cash as of late...it does sort of surprise me.

Not surprising, considering how many times the Xbox 360 was remodeled. Looks like MS is really going to crack down and make the Xbox console a complete system, so there won't be so many flaws that they have to keep adding more hardware to it to remedy the problems.

the funny thing about patents is they have an expiration date. meaning other companies can now use the idea as well.

Really? But still, MS claims to be a supporter of HD DVD, unless HD DVD all of a sudden doubled or tripled the space on its discs, then they might stick an HD DVD drive in the console.

Philips and Sony still own the majority of the Blu-Ray patents.
Since they own the patents im not sure if it has an expiration date. And i check the companies who is involved and MS is not one of them.

The next next gen graphics will be totally real, i bet they will.

But i dont think they should ALREADY start planning the new console, it was just about 1 year since they released the 360.

Why shouldn't they start planning their next console? All companies plan their next consoles just after, if not even before, their upcoming console's launch. The Wii was planned before the Gamecube came out (they had working motion-sensitive controllers that were somewhat similar). The PS4 has already been planned out by Kutaragi before he retired. It's no surprise that Microsoft is planning this right now. They would be idiots to have not started two years after the 360's launch.

Can't be any worse if your comparing the design flaw of the 360. Its obvious that its going to be better. 360 is better than its predecessor, same as PS3is far superior to PS2.
