Five Reasons Game Trilogies Suck

Soul79 | August 16, 2007 | News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3 Misc
Have you ever took the time to think about what the worst things about game trilogies is. Well this guy has, and he hasn't only come up with on thing. No, he's thought about 5 things. Just think, the games could be expensive, they take forever to come out, They could at anytime be cancelled, the games could be terrible, and worst of all the ending might not be worth the wait.
Gamers often get treated to the line that a story is "too big" to be contained in a single game, and therefore needs an entire trilogy to handle it. We see it with games like Halo and the upcoming Mass Effect. More often than not, it all ends up being a load of crap. Here are five reasons why players should groan in despair whenever a story needs to be continued.

There were trilogies that i really liked, like the DBZ Budokai trilogy, i still like it, its great, and every game is keeping on a difference between each other.

I can't say this is a great article, I agree that there is some truth in bits of it, but the majority...lets just say the guy needs to get a life.

    Trilogies are very expensive:
It's called waiting for the price to come down. Firstly a console is going to last years and your not going to get it for 3 games only. If you can't be bothered waiting, then save money beforehand. It's not like it requires a straight-jacket, a katana and a rabbit that fires rockets as a hobby to do.

    They take forever:
Oh please, it's not that bad. Waiting is a part of life and if you have to get your ass online to recall what generally happened then simply don't buy the next game. If you can't remember what happened then you obviously weren't that interested. It's not like your attempting to remember how to do a handstand blindfolded while reciting all of Shakespear's work word for word.

You might not see the end:
Ok, this I can't argue too much with. Although I must say that if the game was good, one way or another you'll get your next two games usually.

The games look bad as a whole:
Oh please, get a bloody life. Technology evolves. And it doesn't ruin the experience unless your a bloody freak. Things have to change. Would you prefer we were still playing 6-bit games on todays consoles? OMG ITS MASTER CHIEF IN 6-BIT FORMAT!!!!!!!! Grow up...

The ending might not be worth it:
This I can't exactly argue against either. Though keep in mind if the games so far were good, the chances of it being an epic failure aren't too high.

Oh yes i have played them, and watched them and i loved it. And anyone hates them its either:
        1. They don't get the movie. or can't played the game well(if there talking about games)
        2. Just hate them for no reason.

How could anyone 'get' the third movie? If anything, it just brought up more questions than answers.

Well Have you seen the animatrix, well it definitely tells you everything you need to know. I fully understand. I don't see how anyone can't understand it. Its not like it rocket science.

There are some trilogies I hate and some trilogies I like

    If I hate them

    -They're boring, they're stupid, I don't like the looks
-If I like them then they have a lot of action and a great story

Your first reasons on why you dislike them is kinda lame IMO. I can understand if the gameplay isn't up to snuff, but looks isn't a reason. Boring is the same, and being stupid is a personal opinion.
So i don't see how there any valid reasons overall to be bad.

      I definately agree.

If I like them, they should have a good story. If I hate them, they probably had a bad storyline, bad graphics etc.

Brawl and Halo 3 will be the first trilogy's I have played form start to end. Most game I play are either from huge series or once offs.

Are they saying one of hose masterpieces in the making could ever possibly, not be worth it.

Usually the first game in a trilogy is the best. After the first, game designers think they have to out-do themselves, and go over the top. -_-

So they think the Metroid Prime triology is bad too? Screw them then.

Not really a great article, heavily baised and it insults some pretty solid franchises.

Usaully if a game gets turned into a trilogy its got to be at least decent.

I think one of the worst things about trilogies is that if its really good you feel bad once you finish it because you know there won't be anymore

I personally find trilogies good. If I like the first film I am nearly bound to like the rest, same with video games really. I don't like knowing when you've finished the 1st or 2nd game or watching film that your never going to see the characters again doing something new, so it's always a shame for me to finish the 3rd but it's understandable.

Hmm... I don't particularly agree with this article. For a short while, GTA was a trilogy, and it was awesome then. Halo is soon to be a trilogy, and it's also awesome.

I do not agree. Like finalblade said DBZ Budokai 3 was the best out the the three games... And that's 'bout the only game I know of that I've played with the number 3 in the title (I usually play no generic games. And most games with 3 in the title are movie games...)
