Xbox 360 to use HDD

xsynergyx | August 01, 2007 | News | XBOX 360
If you remember, back in the days with the Xbox, it had quite amazing graphics for that time period. That was because the data on the DVD games was able to be compressed and then streamed off when played, uncompressing to HDD. Every original Xbox had this and allowed for shorter waits on loading and more data to be transfered onto the DVD. Microsoft plans to do the exact same thing for the Xbox 360, but there's no word on the first game to snag this program.
As many people will remember, the original XBOX was capable of some very large games that contained great AI and graphics for the time. To put it simply, this was possible because the data on the DVD was able to be compressed quite heavily, because it was then streamed off the disc and uncompressed to the HDD that every original XBOX had. This allowed for shorter (less frequent) load times and also allow for much more data to be placed on the DVD.

XF has learned that MS has plans for the 360 to do the very same thing. Games requiring the HDD will initially have a "HDD required" logo clearly viewable on the front of the case, as well being listed as requiring the HDD on the back info panel of the case.

Crackdown requires the HDD for co-op play and a Football(soccer) game requires the HDD, I believe.

Could Microsoft be phasing out the core? Hmmm.

Sucks for core users but it is about time, i am getting sick of using "but the 360 doesn't have a standard HDD in all systems" against it, good to see Microsoft are doing something cool.

Well then what about the three people who have the core system?

If they want to play those games, they'll have to purchase a hard drive.

Too bad for the core users at least they know before buying the game now.

This is what Sony guarded against by shipping all of their SKUs with a Hard Drive. What MicroSoft have effectively done, is cordone off a bunch of games from Core users... unless they want to pay the additional money for a HDD. I know it isn't much, but the main reason people buy the core is because they didn't need a HDD, or they couldn't afford it. MicroSoft said people should have the choice... Now they still have the choice, but its a little bit weighted, no?

Still, I have a HDD so it's awesome that MS are finally utilising it.

Sucks for them. MS should have the HDD included with all there consoles.

This should have been something they added stright away to the console and in the process of having it this late it is upsetting a few customers that got the Core.

I know if I bought a game and couldn't use it because I bought the cheaper console I'd feel quite ripped off. All games for the 360 should work on all 360 consoles.

So, Microsoft is finally stepping up and changing their console. Good move, but honestly, they should have done all their little features and add-ons way back at the release like tidus said.

How so? They're still far ahead. And if people don't want to spend $400 on an Xbox 360, they still don't have to. They just won't be able to play certain games. If these games are ones they don't care about, this doesn't effect them. If they do want to play a game that requires the HDD, then they buy that.

      Pretty simple.

More of a hazard too me. And There not that far ahead. The wii is right behind it about to pass it in a few weeks or month. The PS3 sales are sky-rocketing, ex: amazon.

FB, not really. Were still pretty early into the Next Gen Console wars. If they are to do this now with the recent Price drops and such, it could very well create an even better community.

But: Seems like there leaving the Core users no choice to change.

Could they be phasing out the core....of course they are, they've been doing it since a day after launch.

Which is exactly why Microsoft denounced the discontinuation of the Core system.

As already been said, this should have been done earlier, maybe on the Xbox 360's release.

And yes it sure does seem like Microsoft are leaving Core users in the gutter, however I think this is good as every Xbox 360 gamer should really own a hardrive in my opinion
